LoveSexy - Prince

Really? REALLY? Outside of fans, it's hardly considered even a good album. I think it holds its own among the best of Prince's 80s work.

Scary Monsters - David Bowie boxed

spank That's his best album! hmph!

Calm down, Princess!!! I like the album! hug

Yes, but I'd argue that if anything both of those albums are underrated.

Lovesexy is consistently ranked behind Dirty Mind, 1999, Purple Rain, Parade and SOTT, and often below several others.

Scary Monsters is generally picked well after Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, Station to Station, Low and "Heroes" at the very least.

Who do you consider a great artist (other than P of course)?

Compared to empty, shallow R&B shit like Janet Jackson and Debarge you mean?

Were do I start?
Otis Redding, Al Green, Sly Stone, The Beatles, The Byrds, Big Star, Joni Mitchell, Nick Drake, Van Morrison, Prince, REM, Urban Dance Squad, Lyle Lovett, Deus, Jayhawks, Bjork, Matthew Sweet, King's X, Crowded House, Gavin Friday, Kate Rusby, Mary Black, June Tabor, to make a start.

Its bizarre to see that people here keep defending that plastic, empty R&B shit like Janet Jackson, Beyonce and something called 'Debarge' when there is so much great music to discover and appreciate.

It's bizarre that you can't accept that there is a spectrum and diversity to greatness that doesn't have to conform to your by-the-book opinion on the matter.

LoveSexy and Scary Monsters are great but they're no Planet Earth.

I think you just have a sentimental attachment to them the way many of us do the macarena song. hug

Moonbeam,

Are you trying to say some local R&B-outfit like Debarge are better then the Beatles, or something?

No, I'm saying that you congratulating yourself for your "superior" taste while disregarding the opinions of others simply because they like something you don't like is out of bounds.

how could you even hear it over the sound of yourself gagging and puking and your inner "I HATE THIS I HATE THIS I HATE THIS" monologue? lol

I dont consider myself 'superior' in terms of taste, but when people try to promote the likes of Debarge and Janet Jackson as great artists I can't take them seriously.

That simple it is.

I felt that all the hype over Smooth (which I consider a Rob Thomas song with Santana guitar) made it very overrated.

Exactly right. What's wrong with Janet Jackson or Debarge? If someone enjoys it, isn't that what it's all about?

I love a great dinner at a fine restaurant, and I also like Taco Bell. Each can be enjoyable for what it is. Same with music.

I love lots of critically acclaimed artists and albums, and I also have a wide variety of really cheesy 80's pop that I adore just as much and feel no shame in that whatsoever. cool

Yes, but I wouldn't say Janet or DeBarge are the musical equivalent of Taco Bell, either. Janet in particular released some truly seminal work, and it has been regarded as such by lots of critics.

I don't like The Beatles or Pink Floyd. But I'm not just going to laugh off the opinions of those who do.

Well, true... didn't mean to imply that Janet = Taco Bell. Just sayin' that music doesn't have to be widely perceived as an artistic masterpiece to be enjoyable and have validity.

I am with you 100% on this one. I like his voice and his cover of Hallelujah is gorgeous, and there are a few other things on this that I like, but... meh. I think alot of the material is pretty weak. This album became much more lauded after his death, and I think that had alot to do w/ his sudden acclaim.

I have managed to go all these years without ever hearing this album, despite all its acclaim. I've only heard his Hallelujah cover, and I found it a bit overwrought. I really dislike overstated, bombastic vocals, and I thought it seemed like he oversang that song, at least for my tastes. That put me off looking any further into it. Does he sing in that style throughout the record?

His vocals are kind of squishy & all over the place. It's not bad, I just don't really get into it.
