New Hall & Oates boxset released on October 6! Do What You Want, Be What You Are: The Music of Daryl Hall & John Oates They are the most successful pop music duo of all time. Daryl Hall and John Oates have long since surpassed Simon and Garfunkel and the Everly Brothers in the annals of pop pairings, having scored no less than 22 Billboard Top 20 singles, including six number ones, six platinum albums (sales of more than one million copies) plus another six gold LPs (sales of more than 500,000 units). Spanning the years 1966-2009, DO WHAT YOU WANT, BE WHAT YOU ARE: THE MUSIC OF DARYL HALL & JOHN OATES, the definitive Hall & Oates anthology, collects 74 sublime tracks, culled from seven different labels on its four discs. The set, being released on October 6, showcases 16 previously unreleased cuts including a host of wonderful live performances, as well as never before heard studio tracks and remixes. This set is enhanced with an eloquent introductory essay penned by pop critic Roy Trakin, plus invaluable track-by-track annotation and commentary regarding each track by Daryl Hall and John Oates, drawn from extensive interviews by Ken Sharp. Exactly! This is one of the greatest duos that have ever done pop, rock, and soul masterfully. Hopefully this new collection will put them out there as a major force in the industry again. I didn't hear there new live album yet, but people praised it. I'll have to check that one out as well. I can't wait until October 6th though! Check me out and add me on:

I'll think about getting this one. I love Hall & Oates, but I'm pretty happy with their last 2-disc compilation. "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

Yeah, this one was excellent and it covered alot of ground: It is the only Hall & Oates album I have, but this box set is easily going to overshadow it though! Check me out and add me on:

To be totally honest i have been thinking that for years, but when i see that CHICAGO isnt in, HEART isnt in (now theres a real rock female) i start to realize that because of the 80's stigma's these artists wont be considered overall till the HALL really runs out and finds themselves with no ceromonies and has to start granfathering these acts in "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

I can't wait until October 6th though! the new live cd/dvd is great, the thing that people dont realize is the work of the very very early days, these dudes were a folky singer songwriter type group, and that still is at the roots of their work now once again. The Hall of Fame is just punishing them for the 80's, i mean that and im sure many here will agree on that. BUT this box is amazing, im getting this without a doubt, this is why, and looking at the Beatles remasters and box, HOW can people think that digital downloads with no books and artwork and sense of what went into the work is better. I think the box set accurately captures their career and I don't see why that equals the Hall of Fame. Everyone who ever had a Hit Single or even necessarily a long career are not Hall of Famers. Just my opinion. I don't think they're being punished for the '90's also. Heart as a female band is worthy but for their catalog . . . nah. [Edited 9/7/09 1:23am] I don't want you to think like me. Just my opinion. The second sentence contradicts the first. I'm assuming you forgot a "not" before "everyone," right? At any rate, Hall & Oates were deservedly inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

Heart as a female band is worthy but for their catalog . . . nah. Uh, what? OK heres why all of that reasoning for the most part is wrong. Hall of fame induction is explained as "effect" in your time period and your influence Ok right there All 3 acts go in, Hall and Oates owned their time period, not just hits, they were the DUO plain and simple, never topped or even equaled. The same can be said of Chicago and Heart even if you want to take out the 80's hits they were both dominant in the 70's and Influential on the acts of the times. Saying that Heart doesnt go in based on their "catalog" is a contradiction, you say catalog doesnt matter then it does in other aspects, and IF catalog matters, how the FUCK is percy sledge in HOF, i mean i dont care how you bend it,twist it, bend it, that man should not be in while these others arent. I corrected what I meant to say. Just having a catalog I don't think should get you into the HOF. Heart doesn't have an exceptional catalog except as it relates to them being female rockers leading a band. That's why they deserve the HOF, not because of great contributions musically as other artists have. Personally, I'm not responsible for who is or isn't in the HOF. I couldn't tell you why Percy Sledge is in the HOF. Or if he's in as a singer/performer, writer, producer or what. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

I bought a one disc collection and it seemed like a good deal at the time but I think I would have been better off with a two disc set. The box set seems more for hardcores. Is it just me or does it seem like there are a lot of covers on there (or just familiar song titles?).
