It looks like he's just doing the same thing in all his videos,do he play rhythm guitar?

I'd say it's more of a stage prop than an instrument in his live show.

I assume he plays it properly on in the studio, though.

Depends on the song. For his acoustic stuff, he does a lot of 16th note and staccato strumming.

For the live rock stuff, he basically hits power downstrokes on the 1 and the 3. I think that's more for looks than anything else, and it DOES look cool as hell.
