My take is that she is now very clearly "outside the demographic". Once you cannot "live the demo" - and I'm talking 18-24 - the 'fall off' begins.

It happens to everyone but it is hard to accept.

In very general terms - the 18-24 year old demo runs the music market she has been successful in. Some really melodic hits propelled her last effort and without that - the 'fall off' may have already started.

Now with lesser material, more age, lbs., marriage, talk of having children - the younger crowd cannot relate to her as well.

The fall off begins in earnest when she keeps singing about 18-24 year-old shit and her real followers have moved past most of that trivial Crystal party thing.

I think people are comparing "Obsessed" to what Mariah singles of the past have usually done. So, if we are going to compare the song the way she was charting in the 90's, then, yes, "Obsessed" is a flop.

I love Mariah but have never been overly-impressed with her live performances. She was a pretty good live performer in the 90's but the past several years have been seriously lacking. She doesn't have much stage-presence and I don't think she should tour in promotion of the upcoming CD. Mariah writes her own material, which is where the real money is in the music business, so she really doesn't need to tour.
