I like both OK, but Bowie by a mile for me. His best stuff covers a pretty wide mix of styles, and he manages to be convincing at all of them. Extremely innovative as a performer and arranger, even though he stole stuff he tended to steal from the best.

Bowie & Bolan vs. Elton & Bolan
http://www.youtube.com/wa...RR05ImHQqA http://www.youtube.com/wa...xJ_agcMy5c Love the bit where Marc Bolan falls off stage and Bowie laughs. But... Elton wins. Ringo's mullet nearly lost them points though. Incidentally, 'Madman' by Bowie and Bolan is fabulous. http://www.youtube.com/wa...bgYgndDhdg Never finished past being a demo, but covered by The Cuddly Toys anyway.

wow - what a comparison. I love them both... but I feel like Elton was more pop and Bowie more rock - both having a huge influence. Bowie is more alternative and Elton was more mainstream. VOTE....EARLY

Thanks everyone, for semi-understanding what I was trying to accomplish.
We get caught up in trying to compare our love of certain groups by comparing them to their 'rivals' (Jerry Lee Lewis vs. Elvis) or (Blur vs. Oasis), but I don't think those challenge us to understand what it is that we love about music in general as much as seemingly nonsensical comparisons. I think creative and expressive nature of your answers are fascinating.

there can be only one victor here, and even though Elton's written some very very good tunes, It's Bowie that pushed the envelop and changed the music. The chameleon of music. "Time is a train, makes the future the past"

I guess I'll go with Elton John. I like David Bowie's "Fame" and "Let' Dance" better than anything that Elton John has ever made but those are the only two songs of David's that I like. With Elton, I like lots of his songs from the 1970s. Andy is a four letter word.

for a comparison, yes. i think the point of the thread is to contrast, though.
