Yeah the '90s definitely was dark and aggressive.

That's probably why I didn't like them. None of the genres that came out of the 90s or became big in the 90s did much for me. sad

I remember enjoying one of N Sync's first singles (I can't remember the name of it). I also enjoyed a song that went...."I get knocked down, but I get up again....I ain't never gonna get me down" by Chumbawumba or something. lol And "Are you Jimmy Ray" and "I Just Wanna Fly", and "Legend Of A Cowgirl", and "Semi Charmed Kinda Life"....stuff like that.

disbelief Say it ain't so! That music is among my most hated, particularly Chumbawamba.

People are supposed to love the music of their teenage years. Well, I was a teenager from 1993-2000, and I suppose my absolute horror with most of the music of that era shows that love and hate aren't complete opposites.

This is why I do not have a DJ gig anymore. Because I agree with 98% of your list. Unfortunately - so many DJ's today play almost the entire list above. ...The two songs I DO like from above: No Woman, No Cry - Bob Marley, and Mr. Jones by Counting Crows.
We all want the stuff that's found in our wildest dreams.

It's a shame that mainstream music got hijacked by such crap. I know that there's always been crap in the charts, but in the 90s, it completely took over.

What kind of nineties music? nineties R&B, that is most of you seem to talk about.

There are way more musical styles to cherish.

And why focus on what was popular in the charts? To me the best / most interesting artists are usually the ones that succeed to stay right out of it... lol

Every decade of music has offered something terrible, so I don't think people can rightfully 'hate' on just the 90s or even the 00s for that matter. Some decades just have more great works than bad ones. Personally, I loved the 90s just as much as all the decades that preceded it, but I was born in the early 80s and didn't get to truly experience the music of the 50s, 60s, and 70s when it was originally released, so I cling more to the decades that I can remember the most. However, that doesn't make me appreciate older music any less than the stuff I lived through, because I get to see the evolution of music.

Unfortunately, music nowadays has really started to de-evolve and that de-evolution did kinda start toward the end of the 90s because music really started to repeat itself around that time. The originality started to fade and now we are left with a bunch of poor carbon copies who try to pass themselves off as innovators. I think it's like you said, 'a generation thing' more than anything else, because kids nowadays who are calling into the radio stations and buying the music that is out now aren't old enough to really realize that nothing in the music industry is new or ground-breaking anymore. Even fashion has begun to repeat itself over the past few years.

In reality, music hasn't really changed at all; it's just repeating itself but in a much lackluster and vapid form. There are still a few gems even in this day and age and I, for one, won't blind myself to the stuff that is actually something worth listening to just because of the decade it came out in. Outkast,A Tribe Called Quest,Pete Rock and CL Smooth,Common,Brand Nubian,The Fugees,De La Soul,The Roots... early 90's is considered the golden age of hip-hop..so i can dismiss the whole decade as "shit hop" as some have stated..The Neo-soul movement was in full bloom keeping the traditions of classic soul while R&B went through it's new jack(wack) swing era...there are hits and misses in every decade..this discussion could go on forever because we all are entitled to our opinions.

The 90s was responsible for some great girl groups and many female artists released some of their best works in the 90s. You had TLC (who is still my all-time favorite) and EnVogue hit in the 90s. Aaliyah came out with Timbaland and Missy. There was the rise of Mariah and the debut of Christina Aguilera (Britney also); and Whitney, Janet, and Madonna had some outstanding albums during the 90s. The Fugees came out and gave us a solo Lauryn Hill to end the decade. I will say that I have no shame in admitting that I loved the Backstreet Boys and enjoyed NSync...say what you want, but those guys could 'a capella' the hell out of a song and make it sound outstanding and that's a talent, don't care what anyone has to say hmph! . I even enjoyed the Spice Girls; they were fun and definitely entertaining.

Honestly, the only things I didn't dig too much in the 90s was the violence of gangsta rap and the saddness that came with the grunge sound, but there are even songs and artists from these two genres that I still enjoy. Love 'Rape Me' by Nirvana and 'Keep Ya Head Up' by Tupac; which is still one of my all-time favorite hip-hop songs. Hell, the 90s gave me Maxwell...I can't hate on any decade that gave me something that talented and scrumptious. drool

I don't think there was anything really wrong with the 90s in the end. I just think that many people saw that music started to de-evolve and therefore began to protest it...same thing happened in the 70s with the rise and fall of disco; which is kinda what 'dance pop' really is IMO (disco mixed with techno/house and electronica which doesn't make it all that innovative really). Plus, humans, in general, usually don't like change, so they are hesitant to accept something that is different from things they love. That's why you often hear older people saying things like, 'Back when I was your age, I was listening to James Brown and Motown and this new stuff is crap in comparison.' Of course it would be considered crap to people who actually lived through the golden ages of recorded sound because most of those sounds hadn't really been done yet at that time and now those sounds are emulated and copied within an inch of their lives by current artists who are either too lazy to come up with new sounds or really aren't as talented as they want people to believe them to be.

It really doesn't take a high IQ or any hardcore talent to copy something that has already been done. This new generation is really being robbed because they are just getting a lot of half-assed, left-overs so I feel sorry for them at times because they didn't get to experience the musical sounds that most of the current stuff copies...badly.

Honestly, I have found quite a few artist who have come out in the 2000s that I enjoy just as much as my older artists. I love Chrisette Michele, John Mayer, Wanya, Jennifer Hudson, Heather Headley mushy , and P!nk; just to name a few of my current favorites. There are many people who have said that the younger generation should really search out older music instead of just turning on the radio and following trends, but I believe that those older, more musically knowledgable individuals should take their own advice sometimes instead of choosing to flat-out ignore and discredit all current music. It's not all bad, but as time goes on, music will either become even worse or something great will happen and turn everything around. I'm hoping for the latter, because I believe that music is the bridge between heaven and earth and I don't want to see that bridge fall anytime soon. Just my twocents cool

lol I hated that Eamon song...until I heard the comeback song from this girl named Frankee

Still don't know if she was the girl he was talking about initially, but she put his ass in check and he is now a one-hit wonder.

Honestly, 95% of the songs you listed are songs that after I heard them the 5 times, I wanted to put a pencil through my ear. They were good on initial listening, but like many popular songs, the spark fizzed and died after non-stop repeats. I guess that's the difference between a song that's just popular and a song that's popular and timeless. nod

Can't say I'd like the synth sounds - the introduction of the workstation / rompler -type of solutions just made most people approach realism from the wrong end. Then when towards the end of the decade they introduced VAs with all the accompanying hype, it soon became quite obvious that they were nothing compared to their vintage analog counterparts.

As far as the themes go, I don't like the forced "I'm real" -attitude of many of the so-called "alternative" artists. Much of the 90s can be seen as a counter-reaction to the 80s, but in the end the overt desire to appear authentic just worked against most of those artists. That basically just meant that a lot of the 80s stuff that was considered dated back in the day may now just sound more relevant.

Other than that, my own favourite more marginal genres of music thrived during those years. So in that regard I'm not complaining.

Me too. Of course there was rubbish in the 90's, as is the case with every decade, but overall I loved the 90's.

For me, the 90s is when mainstream music started going downhill... fast! I felt like a musical orphan most of the time, with only a handful of artists that I could really get into, most of whom were bigger in the 80s and the others were left on the outskirts. I've only come to appreciate the 90s more in hindsight, and I'd still place them well behind the 80s, 70s and even the 00s.

Good answer.

I don't get it!!, Why do y'all hate on 90's music so much??... Y'All act like the people in the 40's 50's and early 60's was not hating on the Motown era.I know people who grow up in the 50's(Blues era) hate Motown music.I thank it's a generation thing. Sadly the people who grow up in the New Jack Swing/ Hip-Hop Soul/Real-Hip-Hop are hating on the new generation (2000 era).

If we're talking about hip-hop, 88-93 is my favorite era.

As for 90's music in general, it went downhill for me when the gangsta style of rap AND hip-hop soul (later renamed hip-hop/r&b.....oops, I mean shit-hop/rhythmless bullshit) defeated new jack swing, hip-house, latin freestyle, & club dance by no later than 1995.

CASE IN POINT: In 1995, Planet Soul's Set U Free was THE very last uptempo club dance song to be in the Billboard Hot 100 USA singles chart.

90s pop is what sucked. The invasion of the boyband.

I have to admit. I love Britney, X-tina, and Justin (without N Sync)

1. Britney was a lot sexier within the first 3 albums. At least songs like Baby One More Time & Slave 4 U still have bite.

2. Christina's Stripped album is still worth buying.

3. At least *NSYNC was better than The Backstreet Boys. Pop is a damn great dance track.
