Rolling Stones' "40 Licks" Question

Rd, and the rest of you that have this already. I gotta know one thing before I plunk down $25.00...

Did they edit the shit out of every song?
Is it going to piss me off like listening to Irresistable Bitch and Erotic City from the B-Sides disk of "The Hits/B-sides"?

BLACKMF

Uncut songs on this set. I got the limited edition with the poster and the big book inside. Wonderful set that finally serves the Stones right. Buy it.

That LTD edition is such a rip--their isnt even jewel cases for the cs to go into and the booklet is laughable for the expense of the "LTD" set. My missus tried to surprise me with that one..we took that overpriced thing back and got the regular 40 Licks.

and my muthafuckin' jam... "dancin' with mr. dee"... "if you can't rock me" would have been nice... plus "time is on my side" and "bitch" are pretty essential...

but considering that they were limited to 40 tracks... i give 'em 2 thumbs up...

they don't edit any of the songs on disc one... but in order to fit 20 songs on disc 2, some of the songs are presented in the form of the single edits... that said, it doesn't really mar the set and the edits are barely noticable... only the hardcore fan would even realize it...

the following songs are presented in the form of single edits:
- miss you
- beast of burden
- fool to cry
- mixed emotions
- anybody seen my baby?
- undercover of the night
- emotional rescue
- it's only rock & roll

but, if you are looking for a set that is an introduction to the stones or the one release that sums it up, you should still get this set... very nicely done...

My gfvorite songs by the Stones are now the ones that haven't been overplayed like Dance Part 2, Hand of Fate, Fingerprint File, It Must Be hell, etc etc. What a band they were up until Tattoo You.

You know why they left some good songs off?

BECAUSE THE ROLLING STONES NEED A BOX SET INSTEAD OF A RINKY DINK 2 DISC BEST OF SET! mad

But "Hang Fire" sucks nuts.

ain't that the truth... 40 years and no box set... they were initially hoping to release a box set, but abkco (who owns their 60s recordings) wouldn't agree to it...

they do have one box set that includes the a-side & b-side to every single they ever released for abkco... and that contains some bad-ass shit... but they should still have a comprehensive boxset...

think of all the artists/bands that have box sets that haven't been or weren't around nearly as long as the stones have... shrug...

I've always wondered how a Beatles box set would do on the market, and how many discs it would be. They'd probably compile more than one box for the Beatles with different material. I'd be surprised if a Beatles box would NOT perform well at retail, a lot of Beatles fans would buy it just to keep their collections up to date, not because they don't have the material already.

that's true...

i guess it doesn't bother me for the same reasons that the edits on prince's "hits" doesn't bother... i already have all of the regular versions... "40 licks" is just a nice set for a quick fix when i don't know what stones cd i want to listen to... if i really get in the mood for "beast of burden" (which is the jam), i'll grab my "some girls" cd...

but i can understand how it would get under some people's skin...

True. Plus the fact that during most of the time they were together, pop songs back then weren't usually more than 3 minutes. So you could put a ton of their songs on one disc. Of course this started to slowly change for most recording artists sometime during the late 60s.

my beatles cds...

disc one is 33 tracks... disc two is 26 tracks... and disc three is 21 tracks...

so you can see that the trends are changing and songs are getting longer... but that's a hell of a lot of songs considering the time they were together... i find 3 discs to be sufficient...

it's a blast to hear the stones incorporating funky rhythms along with some disco beats and the speed, volume, and fury of punk into their music... and then there's the one country song...... it is bad ass...

I have the 'Some Girls' CD (1978) and it is great! Contains the full version of "Miss You" and it kicks ass! But to tell you the truth,I rarely play the rest of the album."Miss You" pretty much overshadows everything else, imo.
