Let's go back a little: JODY WATLEY

An 80's mood hit me the other day so I popped in Jody Watley's first album. Though I can't speak for most of it & I don't consider Looking for a New Love (the most popular song from the album) very strong, she had some pretty good cuts on there!

Still a Thrill sounds good to this day - the deep voiced delivery is killer, I can always listen to this one.

Don't You Want Me is just cool, nice video too (especially for that cheesy time) - good beat, nice melody, simple & cute.

Love Injection had to grow on me but it's cool! The beat is funky, lyrics are kinda corny but you gotta just forgive yourself & go with it biggrin

Some Kind of Lover is the most pop sounding of the bunch (that I like) but still alright.

I also liked Friends & Everything from her Larger than Life album (don't own that one though)...

Pretty good for a Soul Train dancer, right? biggrin Anybody else get nostalgic & dig her? headbang
heart prince I never met you, but I LOVE you & I will forever!! Thank you for being YOU - my little Princey, the best to EVER do it prince heart

I love Jody Watley.I've always felt that she never really got the recognition and fame she deserved. Her first solo album in 1987 was HUGE,but subsequent albums were largely ignored.

And of course,I love the work she did as a member of Shalamar.

I remember Jody when she danced on Soul Train! (Where is the ST gang?) biggrin

Yes! Still a Thrill is the joint! Her vocals remind me of the vocals on George Michael's Hard Day

Does any one know if Jody sang on this record???

Jody was tha bomb!

She was the FIRST to utter "Hasta lavista baby!" in "Looking for a New Love" long before Arnold jacked her line for his flick.

"Still a Thrill" had that classic MPLS sound that Andre Cymone brought to her so well.

"Don't You Want Me" was a great club hit.

"Friends" with Rakim was one of the earliest to R&B songs to feature a rapper.

"Real Love"...

oh the list goes on. And you could tell that Andre (& a lot of David Z's production work) was all over that. Great beats, great basslines, and great rhythm tracks.

So sad that she and Andre fell away from each other.

Her greatest hits is a must have!

I'd never heard of her before some American started talking to me online about her. Looked her up in a UK chart book. She never had a hit here. I suppose Five Star, Neneh Cherry and the like were just more accessable in Europe. That's also my theory as to why Janet Jackson has only had a couple of big hits outside the USA.

Umm I said ONE of the first, not "the first." To my knowledge she was among the first to use a rapper on the level of a Rakim.

Who did Rene and Angela use?

always enjoyed Her.I Knew Jody was Badd from the Shalamar days until She went Solo.Jody was soo Bad that She had a tight Tribute Jam Named after Her.the Late Jermaine Stewart had that Jam"Everybody wants a Piece of Jody". that was the Jam.Jody's first Two Albums with Andre Cymone&David Z were tough. She&Andre had strong Chemistry IMHO.quite a few Acts used Rappers on there Songs.Rick James had Melle Mel on His Cold Blooded Album back in 1983 for the song "Pimp The Simp".but Jody&Eric B.&Rakim worked really well.they tried getting back together in 97-98 on a Song&the Song got released but Jody's Album never came out.Jody kept challenging Herself with each release She made but got fewer&fewer support from Her Record Companys over time.Jody had a Cool FLow.

I loved her but I think her last album (which was called "Saturday Night..Something...") was only released not in Europe but Japan! Career kiss of death (not like it was going great with "Flowers" which was delayed, etc.( I think it was suppose to be good too!

First song that came to mind: "Looking for a new love" but all the others were pretty cool, especially "Some kind of lover", which I liked better...smile
