new radiohead song "harry patch (in memory of)" available at their waste.com

from deadairspace (http://www.radiohead.com/deadairspace):

"i am the only one that got through
the others died where ever they fell
it was an ambush
they came up from all sides
give your leaders each a gun and then let them fight it out themselves
i've seen devils coming up from the ground
i've seen hell upon this earth
the next will be chemical but they will never learn"

Recently the last remaining UK veteran of the 1st world war Harry Patch died at the age of 111.
I had heard a very emotional interview with him a few years ago on the Today program on Radio4.
The way he talked about war had a profound effect on me.
It became the inspiration for a song that we happened to record a few weeks before his death.
It was done live in an abbey. The strings were arranged by Jonny.
I very much hope the song does justice to his memory as the last survivor.

It would be very easy for our generation to forget the true horror of war, without the likes of Harry to remind us.
I hope we do not forget.

As Harry himself said
"Irrespective of the uniforms we wore, we were all victims".

This morning the Today program played the song for the first time and now it is available to download from our website.

Please click here to download.

The proceeds of this song will go to the British Legion.

To peace and understanding.

on a related note, thom yorke's latest solo offering:

Thom Yorke's new song. 'All for the Best', is a cover for the Ciao My Shining Star: The Songs of Mark Mulcahy tribute album. Thom's very own brother, in addition to having his own track on the album under his band Unbelievable Truth, provides the backing vocals for All for the Best. I'm pretty sure this is the first time the two brothers have ever recorded together. It sounds like a natural progression from the work he recorded for 'The Eraser' album and I'm assuming the production is once again by Nigel Godrich.

I love Radiohead but this one is a sleeper. And not in a good way. I thought the strings were nice but it dragged on and seemed a lot longer than it's three or four minutes. I can't believe I'm saying this... sad

I'm gonna go play Jaydiohead...

Use Google and append "site:prince.org" to your search term (no quotes).

It's quite beautiful. I do miss the band's touch, but Jonny's arrangement for the strings is nothing short of breathtaking and so reverently English.

I think it still needs to grow on me.

BTW, Ed O'Brien and Phil Selway will be on the second 7 Worlds Collide supergroup album released at the end of the month in the UK and next month most other places. Here's a video of Phil's song, where he steps away from the drums to play guitar and sing:

As much as I have admired P.T. Andersen's work over the years, I've not seen that one yet, nor heard the music.
