Jackson 5..GET IT TOGETHER lp (1973) Many people dismissed the Jackson 5 1973 GET IT TOGETHER album. Honestly, I think I like this album more than any of the other Jackson 5 or Jacksons albums. This album presented the Jacksons at their consistent funkiest. From their funky re work of The Temptations HUM ALONG AND DANCE, to the driving funk of GET IT TOGETHER, YOU NEED LOVE and DANCING MACHINE to the gorgeous TO LATE TO CHANGE THE TIME, the GET IT TOGETHER album represented the J5 responding to not only their maturing in age but a change in the musical landscape. Lets appreciate the GET IT TOGETHER album!

It's a good album, don't get me wrong, but not one of their best. For the J5, I prefer Third Album, Maybe Tomorrow, and Jackson 5 Christmas Album (and probably ABC and Diana Ross Presents). For the Jacksons, Destiny and Triumph are easily better. "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

to me, DESTINY and TRIUMPH didnt have a group feel...and the earlier Jacksons albums were a bit too syrupy..yea..they were cute but you could tell that by GET IT TOGETHER, the group was maturing...I dont think I ever heard Tito solo before HUM ALONG...

It's no question this is when The J5 turned the corner into a more mature direction. I think it was already evident on Looking Through The Windows. Michael's voice was changing and all of them were growing up so Motown did a great job with them on this album and making that transition. Personally, I've always dug this album a lot and the J5 were certainly at home when it came to funk. The vibe at the time when this album came out was everybody still loved the J5 but as I stated about this before on another thread, I think because the J5 were growing up, physically and mentally, and becoming more sophisticated, the fan base felt like they were "losing" the 69-71 era J5. I think the spiritual connection the fans felt for the J5 during 70 and 71 especially, were so strong during that period.... Their sound, their image was so potent and what they represented to that generation of kids, although the fans themselves were growing up too, I still think that when the J5 came with Get It Together and Dancing Machine, that fan base realized that the J5 were no longer the SAME cats that were singing "Sugar Daddy". They no longer looked the same and they no longer sounded the same. Nor should they have. The J5 were hella seasoned performers and Michael was a bonafide pro so that "sophistication" that is evident on Get It Together as well as Dancing Machine is fitting. They just showed they were maturing and I think the reason Get It Together isn't usually embraced with the warm fuzzy teddy bear type of love has something to do with that. Just my thought. Randy was doing his thing on those bongos! Right in step with the others. I remember when the J5 were on Soul Train doing this song. You know how usually the dancers on the floor usually keep dancing when the guest are performing? Nah, not THIS time...Everybody's eyes were glued to the stage and when Micheal started doing "The Robot", all hell broke loose! Yeah, Moving Violations is over looked. So is Skywriter. There is some good stuff on there, I think. It was all transitional for the J5 I think with their fans. Many times too, with most artists, when an artist or a group, band, etc., gets so popular for a period of time, there is what I call the "subconcious backlash" that takes place against them from some of their own fans. Then after awhile again, the cosmos changes and bang, their "hot" again. People, if nothing else, are certainly fickle. That's why as an artist, it always pays to stay true to whatever it is that you do. When the tide changes, when it settles, like it always does, then there you'll be, still doing your thing. So then here they'll come right back to you. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

Been listening to SkyWriter and Get it Together a lot lately.
Matter of fact Skywriter just today at the pool. Anyway great underated stuff from J5 Get It Together is my fave. They rereleased all the J5 stuff a couple years ago and stuck 2 albums together plus bonus tracks. Skywriter/GIT were paired together. Unfortunately, these are already out of print and going for insane prices. I'm sure they will rerelease them again in some way shape or form. Fantasy is reality in the world today. But I'll keep hangin in there, that is the only way.
