i thought lionel and stevie were definitely having a hard time. stevie cracked a little at the beginning of his performance, but again...so what? he's human. if anything, it just made the tribute feel that much more real.

one of the reasons i went all samaurai on this thread was so i could say this: i thought mariah's performance at the memorial was maybe the BEST i've ever seen her do. not because her pipes sounded great. they didn't. but because for the first time EVER, i was watching mariah perform and i BELIEVED what she was singing. she wasn't just being a showoff diva, the song was coming from her heart and getting ripped from her guts. i'm not a mariah fan, but i was glued to the screen when she sang. i thought it was amazing and raw and real. good for her. she has nothing to apologize for as far as i'm concerned. IMO when she first started off in her career, she was singing from her soul and wasn't worried about being a "showoff diva"... So i can't say this is her best performance, because i have seen her just sing her heart out and it was amazing. I could believe it had to do with her being upset, but she has been sounding like this for the last two years, so what is her excuse for her recent performances. Her vocal peak was 1998. After that, something happened to her voice and it just got worse. I remember how wonderfully she sang When You Believe with Whitney, Whenever You Call with Brian McKnight, and her cover version of I still Believe. After 1998, it all went downhill She definitely was overcome with emotion. As much as I love Mariah, I agree with TotalAlisa and suga10. She has been especially off with her vocals for the last couple of years. I could understand why she had difficulty singing at the memorial, but what was her excuses for the Inauguration, the AMA's. or even when she was on SNL promoting E=MC2? I understand that a lot of vocalists lose a portion of their voice as they age, but her voice has gotten worse these last few years. She needs to take some vocal lessons on managing her throat and breathing and working on her fundamentals so her voice can sound clear.

Mariah get on my last nerve, but she doesn't need to apologize for anything here.
This was a memorial service, not some $100-per-ticket Las Vegas show where she's supposed to be near superhuman. Mariah paid her respects quite beautifully -- all the moreso because of her vulnerability. Now elsewhere in her career? Let's leave that to other explanations. [Edited 7/9/09 17:12pm] Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

also keep in mind this wasn't a concert ! the family was nice enough to share a service with the world.... this was so sudden ...I doubt anyone was expecting to sing for his service or have time to rehearse.
Even newspapers had the audacity to critique performances as if this was a award show

But she was singing to michael so i give her some credit, but im not going to give her a free pass, cause she has been singing like this for a few years.

Why did she have to have her cleavage showing and that glittery stuff to enhance her breast, THIS IS A Funeral. I was saying: "come on Mariah, you're not promoting the album." A simple black dress would have been more appropriate, and she was giving a little too much divatude at the beginning. I think her performance was the Lord telling her- "Awww not today. I'm gonna make you humble yourself on this one."

I couldnt agree more. i think she looks very uncomfortable performing live now, because she knows her voice is not what it used to be. I do think she could improve, if she laid of the damn champagne, and took a disciplined approach to being coached how to sing with her slightly more mature voice. At the moment everytime she opens her mouth she looks like she herself is waiting for her to hit a wrong or raspy note. She still sounds good, but as someone said about Whitney - Whitney without THE voice is like sex without an orgasm, whats the point? She needs to address it before its too late.

The way she introduced Trey Lorenz was identical to the way she introduced him in MTV Unplugged and that shows to me that she was singing her song, not MJ's (if anyone understands what I mean). But she was the obvious choice for singing in the memorial. She had a number one with a Jackson cover so she got invited. Thank god they didn't invite Madonna (who I absolutely adore) to re-do her version of Billie Jean from the Virgin Tour lol

Okay, I just saw the performance. The voice hasn't totally gone, but it's diminished. Hardly news. It's been that way for years. It's the quieter notes she struggles with mostly.
Her vocal peak was at the very beginning of her career in the early 90s. By the late 90s, it was already in decline. Not on record of course, but in her live performances. “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”
