And another thing...who were those LITTLE girls up on stage with Lil' Wayne, etc??? I hope like hell they were cousins or relatives 'cause they looked like they were about 12 or 13 years old. "Let love be your perfect weapon..." ~~Andy Biersack

The stars tried to pull this off.
Michael died so abruptly that the BET awards turned out a disaster!!! I'll give them an A for effort... A stupid man’s report of what a clever man says can never be accurate, because he unconciously translates what he hears into something he can understand.

I turned it off before Lil' Wayne could assail my ears with all of that cussing (seriously, why perform if half of the song is gonna get bleeped out?), so I unfortunately missed Janet. Seeing the pure anguish on her face was hard enough, but when she nearly broke down, so did I. My heart truly goes out to her. I have two brothers myself, and I can't imagine what it would be like to lose one of them (God forbid!!!). If I could hug that entire family, I would. Honey, stop talking and just create the music.

The family "elected" someone responsible and who truly loved and didn't abuse Mike to represent them at the awards show. That said, she looked magnificent (but very, very sad - obviously). CNN reported that a BET rep said a family member would be there and when Joe was seen at the red carpet, it was assumed it was him. I know I assumed he would be representing the family and perhaps speaking. Thinks about it, what was the purpose of him being there if someone else was going to speak? He was there to party. Joe is shit. I'm so glad they didn't let his ass up on the mic, it would have been a disaster. They probably felt obligated to have someone from the family say something since the show was supposedly dedicated to him. I hate that she had to speak publicly so soon, it must've been so hard

Not even MJ is enough to make me watch the BET awards. I caught New Edition and Janet on youtube.
I haven't read this thread but is there anything else worthwatching on this show?

I think it was kind of a weird statement that the entire family thought it was "too painful" to go out there, so they sent the baby of the family -- and the closest to Michael -- to represent them!! ...When Joseph's crazy butt was right there!! I have no choice but to respect their family dynamics and choices, but they get odder and odder in my mind. [Edited 6/28/09 21:05pm] i feel you on this but for the the fact that she truly would be the one to make a statement. no one wants to see or hear Jermaine again- and Michaels three older brothers have all cried publicly just over the allegations crap, they would not have been able to do it....- that would have left- Toya, Reebie . Momma, Joe or Janet- unfortunately, idda picked Janet..... joe- that's just another story- maybe it's not real to him yet- he's completely disconnected- I think his survival skills have kicked in... LOVE HARD.

I haven't read this thread but is there anything else worthwatching on this show? The tribute performances that showed the most respectable amount of restraint were Ne-Yo's "Lady of My Life" and his duet with Jamie Foxx "I'll Be There". They just sang, subdued, with sparse musical accompaniment. It was the complete opposite to Beyonce, who had the gaul to do a costume change onstage while she portrayed herself as angel singing Ave Maria. I didn't know if she was paying tribute to Michael, auditioning to sing for his funeral, or working the kinks out a Vegas Le Cirque extravaganza ...in her everpresent leotard, no less

You know I escaped the show for the most part but when my cousin took me to his family's crib to see wrestling, he decided to check it out, I just watched, first with gratitude to know I caught the O'Jays (but damn Don Cornelius needed to pipe down, dude didn't know when to just quit, did he? Then again as Eddie said "he's always that slow" ) and a BIT of Maxwell before he turned. Then when he turned back, I saw that ridiculous shit with Drake and 'em. And it sicken me when I heard them yell "peace out Michael!" Like Michael don't give a FUCK about you. I bet before he died he didn't even know what a Lil' Wayne was, hell he didn't even know Soulja Boy and I can't say I blame him for not knowing him! And Debra Lee, God something about that woman makes my skin crawl. I didn't see Janet but I probably would've just sigh and shed a tear. I feel for her right now. [Edited 6/29/09 0:27am]

I agree, I thought Beyonce's costume change into some weird bride/angel with a tiara and veil and bigASS hoopskirt or WHATEVER that was, was totally disgusting and inappropriate. She took what (I thought, anyway) was intended to be a performance seemingly devoted to Michael's memory and vainly twisted it into something self-indulgent and crass. She even did a few little catwalk twirls and poses. I thought it was gross. Considering the circumstances, would it have been so hard for her to just wear a simple dress and, instead of playing the diva, just have let the emphasis stay where it SHOULD have...that being Michael?
