oh come on. you know Michael was smiling down on this from heaven. but he was probably wondering where the sequined military costumes, the choir of 500 children from third world nations and the 50 foot moonwalking robot shooting lasers from its eyes were. lol

I doubt that, errant. lol I'm sure he's flipping the channels in Heaven going "man is this what I get?" lol

well, yes, unfortunately for Michael's memory, the BET awards were the first televised extravaganza to come up after his death. shit, why couldn't they have pre-recorded this last weekend. confused

what's the next soonest one, so that we can get a decent tribute? MTV VMA's?

Looking at Tiny tonight, Claudia Jordan was kinda right. She said she didn't know whether to shake her hand or put a quarter in her back disbelief

and with that said, Peace ya'll! biggrin

Ths was one of the best shows they've put on. Would have been excellent if Soulja Boy and the Cash Money set had been axed. I thought Jamie did great, starting with a lot of levity and ending in solemn respect.

Beyonce's performance was haunting, and not in a good way. eek
Michael never stopped!

They just sang, subdued, with sparse musical accompaniment. It was the complete opposite to Beyonce, who had the gaul to do a costume change onstage while she portrayed herself as angel singing Ave Maria. I didn't know if she was paying tribute to Michael, auditioning to sing for his funeral, or working the kinks out a Vegas Le Cirque extravaganza disbelief...in her everpresent leotard, no less rolleyes

Ooh I didn't see that. That was beautiful. But I knew I wouldn't be able to enjoy it fully because of all the minstrel bullshit I knew was going to be in there.

Yup. Those two men were very very subdued, sang simply and wonderfully without going overboard, and even Ne-yo had enough sense to remove his hat during his performances as a sign of respect to the dead. So they get a pass from me for those 2 performances.

I agree, I thought Beyonce's costume change into some weird bride/angel with a tiara and veil and bigASS hoopskirt or WHATEVER that was, was totally disgusting and inappropriate. She took what (I thought, anyway) was intended to be a performance seemingly devoted to Michael's memory and vainly twisted it into something self-indulgent and crass. She even did a few little catwalk twirls and poses. I thought it was gross. Considering the circumstances, would it have been so hard for her to just wear a simple dress and, instead of playing the diva, just have let the emphasis stay where it SHOULD have...that being Michael?
[Edited 6/29/09 0:50am]

EXACTLY.

Like I said, this may as well have been the excerpt from Beyonce doing Cirque du Soleil in Vegas, and as great a r&p/pop singer she is, she sounds atrocious trying to excercise operatic chops. That's just not. her. forte. Bless her heart but the chile sounded like her throat was full of Jello Pudding. Michael is probably up in heaven consoling Marian Anderson as we speak. disbelief

So....have the BET Awards always been this ghetto? Or is that the culture for the kids nowadays?
• Did you first think Prince was gay? •

Wendy: He’s a girl, for sure, but he’s not gay. He looked at me like a gay woman would look at another woman. Lisa: Totally. He’s like a fancy lesbian.

I just watched some clips of the BET-event on their site. I hoped that they already had posted Ne-Yo's performance of "lady In My Life", though the "I'll Be There" duet from Jamie & Ne-Yo is uploaded.
Also watched the performance of Kid Cudi on 106 & Park. Kid Cudi partly sang over his voice on tape. I know he's getting props in the media and that he's got a solid fanbase,
but that singing part of him sounded very amateurish to me. I might see this wrong but i feel that in some cases the bar for aknowleding "performing" talent in urban music seems much lower,
and a tool such as "autotune" doesn't help that much either.

Sorry for the rant & party on.

well the people already have expressed their reaction to Joe plugging his business partner/ plans it's reached CNN that it was in bad taste so this is good! Too bad Londell walked away before this man opened his mouth, for benefit of doubts sake perhaps it hasn't hit him.

My thoughts are as others mentioned he is without a doubt disconnected and the primary reason for many of the family members state of mind then and now.

You know what is so weird about it: every "new jack swing" act admitted they were influenced by MJ.

And Uncle Charlie's skills bridging the gap.

Although it's tempting to call them that, the use of that term always comes across as if every artist is basically seen as disposable once they're no more in the commercial limelight.
It's like totally forgetting that they accomplished recording quality material. No matter how messed up Keith Sweat might've sung on the BET-event which is very unfortunate,
nevertheless he has been representing himself on an important point of change in urban music and can be aknowledged for that.

this old man is boring

This "old man" is a main reason why events like this (no matter the many differences among watchers) are alive today.
I hope Don will be remembered and respected for what he has accomplished with urban music on television.
Watch some classic episodes of Soul Train and see the respect of how he represents and interviews artists in those shows.

If the general public had any taste, all the current so-called artists on that show and most of those for the last 15 years would be has-beens.

This thread is too long to go back and wade through all the minstrel shit (which is depressing) to look for the original poster's comment to quote on so I'll just reply here.....The "old man" couldn't be half as boring as the rest of the show.

Jamie Foxx is such a greasy slease bag...the "Beat It" thing didn't bother me as much as him making reference to his "Boa Constrictor" and actually grabbing it several time. I hate this type of negroidian bofooery. Grossly inappropriate. Why are these current black entertainers so happy to make us all look bad. confused

I recorded it in case something good happened and as I scrolled through looking for Janet (who looked beautiful even in mourning) I see it was truly a cringefest of the largest proportion. For some reason T-Pain stood out to me. Going on stage with a cup and the glasses and his whole look wearing an MJ shirt. What a f*cking disgrace.disbelief Why is it so hard for people to have some dignity for one day? I wanted to fly out to LA and kick him in the throat. I decided to fast forward in superspeed and then go backward since Janet was on at the end. As soon as she was done, I was done.
Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

cool The show was not the best or worst. It had it's moments. The opener New Edition was very good. Jamie Foxx over did it every time he opened his mouth. Neo paying tribute to MJ (Lady of My Life) was the best....also his performance bringing out the old school new Jack Swing singers Keith Sweat, Guy, & BBD was good. All the rappers SUCKED. Beyonce sounded great...i was a bit confused with the look. What was that all about? Someone else should have presented the O'Jays. Don Cornelius sounded & looked lost. I will not even mention the singers chosen to do their songs. Janet Jackson coming out & saying Thanks was definitely the highlight of the evening very touching. Bet did do something nice showing respect. Overall the show was sloppy.

Who thinks Janet Jackson was pushed out there before she was ready by Papa Jackson? I really got the feeling that she was NOT ready to do it but buckled under family pressure.

I think it was kind of a weird statement that the entire family thought it was "too painful" to go out there, so they sent the baby of the family -- and the closest to Michael -- to represent them!! ...When Joseph's crazy butt was right there!! I have no choice but to respect their family dynamics and choices, but they get odder and odder in my mind. confused
[Edited 6/28/09 21:05pm]

Well speaking for myself I have had a resent death in my family also so I know how janet much feel I am also the baby in my family and I was very close to my brother that passed away and I was kind of like janet as in representing the family because everyone else could not do it.so don't discount the baby as the weak one because we are stronger then you think.

Beyonce could have sung a Michael Jackson song or her song "Halo" to honor Michael but because she wants to show off she sung "Ava Maria" in a bad jewel up bathing suit. That Bride/angel/ballerina outfit was not cute.
