He might have done some significant things on a 'pop level', but he is also way overrrated. He was a commercial artist in the first place, with his head too high up in the air, when on an artistic level he hasnt made any real difference or impact. The hysterical behaviour by the media, fans and press towards his death, simply shows the superficiality and hypocrisy many amercians use. MJ was a pop-icon, not a great musical artist, just because he had commercial succes doesnt mean he was really relevant. After Thriller (A Quincy Jones-product) he has been busy to get that same kind of succes with his next albums and tours (when you have some common sense, you know that its a one time thing), but what we did get was a confused, childish moron with issues, an adult guy way to fond of little boys, a mental wreck. What was left was a sad, pathetic guy trying to defend himselves. A guy who hasnt done anyting musically important since the Thriller album. Thriller was not QJ's product. I agree, his production was genious, but the best songs of the album are Michael's. And Rod Temperton did write three great songs as well - all QJ's product? And yes he was a commercial artist. But being commercial means reaching a lot of people IS why now the whole world is sad. You can be the greatest musician ever, as long as you're unable to connect with an audience you're not gonna be influencial. People love MJ for what he has done to pop-culture. He reformed the way the male superstar has to perform, he set standards for sales and popularity. People take him and say: He's great, but not as great as MJ. Also you can't blame Americans for hypocrisy when it'sd actually the whole world that's moarning.

Rick James gets defended here, when he was an ignorant cokehead who abducted a woman with his wife, and abused her sexually and mentally. Michael Jackson was accused of childabuse. He didnt get jailed. But there was enough proof he was being acting sickly at least. Just the fact these two people are artists you like, seem reason enough for accept their ´missteps´. The fact is.. when those two werent artists you loved, you probably wished them 30 years in jail, or for life sentence. How hypocrite you are then "Hypocrite" is a noun.

Well fellow orgers... I played hooky today and with my mommy in tow, we took a quick short trip (via Indiana/Illinois Tollway) over to Gary IN to see what was happening at the childhood home of the Michael Jackson's. Black, brown, white, old, young, toddlers were all at 2300 Jackson Street to pay homage and celebrate Gary's native son. News crews from all parts of the country along with fans were taking in the sights and sound (the incredible music of The Jackson 5, The Jackson's and of course Michael Jackson) pulsated from a car with a serious sound system. Many took pictures, left homemade signs, drawings and teddy bears at 2300 Jackson St. At one point an impromptu dancing broke out as many fans showed off the trademark moves of MJ. Father's danced with their children and the atmosphere was one of jubilation than one of sorrow.
Here are just a few pics: I download more just as soon as my mother finds her cellphone cable! My pics aren't too good but this was a spare of the moment deal and I used my cheapo lil' $15 digital camera I keep in my car. Peace. Local Gary IN. There is no excuse for that: a bad childhood, so? He could have seeked help So, when musicians have done nice and/or important things, you 'forgive' their faults automatically? Rick James and his wife have kidnapped another woman, and have abused her. Still I see people defending Rick James here. Michael Jackson has let little boys sleep in his bed, and did also abuse them. His kids are all white, and are event his own kids. When he wasnt Michael Jackson, but simply Jake or Hank living around the corner, you would have condemed these men for child abuse. But since it is Michael Jackson: the one who kept whining about his bad youth, his non-existing skin disease, all the lies about his plastic surgery, all the empty victim-behaviour, you keep defending that moron. a bunch of us said he'd never do the 50 but I didn't think it would be because of death! It probably would be because he felt he was forced to do it even if he agreed to do it. We truly don't know because Randy Phillips' account was that he was game to do the 50 shows. I just keep thinking that either he overdid it or he was over-medicated as Oxman said. I do believe he may have suffered an accidental overdose. I doubt it was suicide at all. [Edited 6/26/09 17:26pm]

Yes, and everyone knows its big and juicy. Now let's see if that coward can tell us who these great musicians are who apparently are so high on the "artistic level". For me, Jimi Hendrix, James Brown were the greatest, along with MJ, and Prince is one of the great ever too. But i'm curious to hear who these other so called high "artistic" level musicians are that Riverpoet is having ejaculations over.

You don't need to appreciate the man's music to show respect for a fellow human's death. He deserves the same respect and prayers as anyone else.
I grew up on MJ from the last 70s all the way through the late 80s. He was my favorite when Thriller came out, and I even had the red "leather" jacket from the Thriller video (not the Beat It one). I always got a sentimental smile when I heard his music - not once did I ever think "man am I sick of hearing this". I think that is probably because he did not oversaturate the market with his solo work which makes every album special in its own way. I don't agree with or condone how he handled his adult life, but that's none of my business. He was not a role model to me, or a saviour. What he was to me was pure entertainment, and in that capacity he was one of the best I've heard (I save that top spot for this site's namesake). Michael, thank you for the music and I hope you find the peace you could not find on this Earth. Your music will live on through the ages.

i like what rev al said, paraphrasing, that a lot of these people with statements now wouldn't be seen w/ mj even yesterday morning before his death.
lmp posts this long blog about him, about her being 'gutted' over his death. yet she and her mother trashed this man when she was out promoting her album(s). acted like she had no relationship with him after their divorce in spite of the fact that there are all sorts of pictures out there of them after the divorce. i don't watch her show, but as i understand it, oprah even got in on the act when the presleys appeared. oprah may have been a popular talk show host, but that interview with mj enabled her to be seen in the same realm as barbara walters when it came to celebrity interviews. the celebs started flocking to her after mj. (well, to be fair she hasn't made a statement!) i remember being on an mj board at the time of the trial and someone posted quincy's blog from the huffington post. it wasn't very complimentary coming from someone who now talks about mj being 'his brother'. cher, too, not so charitable in her comments a few years ago. mccartney mocking mj's speaking voice so contemputuously that the bbc(?) edited his comments b/c of fears would be considered political incorrect. but now he feels privleged to have worked with the 'manboy'. whatever, peeps. i still have a vague memory of the diana ross special with the j5 and that crazy cartoon show and the record on the back of the alphabet cereal box. i was there for the robot *and* the moonwalk. i feel so numb. i haven't been able to cry yet, but i will. i will.
