In terms of his adult work as a writer/producer, I liken him to George Michael more than anyone else. That is the best comparison, not in terms of their outcomes, but in terms of their processes. Neither of them are really musicians in the strict sense, but they both were able to find the right grooves to fit their songs. Musically they were both extremely conventional, but effective. Neither of them were musical originals, but MJ got better results because he collaborated with greater producers than George (Quincy being the obvious example). George tended to work alone or with lesser producers and it shows. MJ was a much better singer, but George was a better lyricist and songwriter.

Also, Prince is too challenging and perverse as an artist and as a person to have that much mass appeal. MJ comes across as a much nicer guy (ironic when you consider what a deceitful and manipulative paedophile he actually was). Prince appeared naked on album covers and was seen as overtly gay by many. This will always limit his appeal. Prince's death will not be such a big deal, and only knowledgeable music lovers will remember him in future. MJ will be remembered by the masses more, even though he was not in Prince's league as an overall artist.

there's a lot more to GM than you clearly know. he wrote, played, and produced his own records, and always sang live in concert. there's no real comparison to MJ apart from being a major solo artist in the 80s and 90s. he's had a pile of number 1 singles

MJ had 13 number 1 singles in the states, and only 9 in the UK, so GM has had more number 1 hits here in the UK than MJ and only 1 short in the states, and GM is still alive to have more hits

sorry, i didn't want to take things off course, but it's incredible how people will go on so much about artists they don't have a clue about. i don't normally bother or care about chart placings, in fact i was surprised GM had so many number 1 singles, especially in the states. if he didn't refuse to record/release during his well publicized spat with sony in the 90s he could have done a lot better. and whilst he hated touring, he at least made a number of appearances at large charity events, like live aid, live 8, net aid, etc. anything that had aid in it that was a concert, and GM was there. he obviously smoked to much weed when he turned up to lemon aid though.

Great thread !

I agree with the number 1 song it's been one of my favs of his new era, did not know the full story behind the song...great!

1 - Stranger In Moscow

Since release, Michael has always said this was his most personal song. Written in a hotel room in Moscow in September 1993 while the child abuse allegation was peaking in the tabloids, yet he still had no legal obligations to return to the US until December, so just carried on with the 3rd leg of the Dangerous tour whilst seriously addicted to painkillers.

The whole song just depicts the feeling of loneliness, starting off with the sound of rain and then Michael's enhanced beatbox, the guitar and that haunting whistle. He solely wrote, produced and arranged this - it's just Michael Jackson through and through. Reaching #4 in November 1996, it almost doesn't seem fit for single material when all those fucking hideous remixes take all the soul out of the entire thing. I honestly can't even pick out any stand out lines because it's all so good:

I was wandering in the rain
Mask of life, feelin' insane
Swift and sudden fall from grace
Sunny days seem far away
Kremlin's shadow belittlin' me
Stalin's tomb won't let me be
On and on and on it came
Wish the rain would just let me be

How does it feel (How does it feel)
How does it feel
How does it feel
When you're alone
And you're cold inside

Here abandoned in my fame
Armageddon of the brain
KGB was doggin' me
Take my name and just let me be
Then a begger boy called my name
Happy days will drown the pain
On and on and on it came
And again, and again, and again...
Take my name and just let me be

How does it feel (How does it feel)
How does it feel
How does it feel
How does it feel
How does it feel (How does it feel now)
How does it feel
How does it feel
When you're alone
And you're cold inside

How does it feel (How does it feel)
How does it feel
How does it feel
How does it feel
How does it feel (How does it feel now)
How does it feel
How does it feel
When you're alone
And you're cold inside

Like stranger in Moscow
Like stranger in Moscow
We're talkin' danger
We're talkin' danger, baby
Like stranger in Moscow
We're talkin' danger
We're talkin' danger, baby
Like stranger in Moscow
I'm live in lonely
I'm live in lonely, baby
Stranger in Moscow

Dude, have you actually listened to a word I've said? I'm not talking about what MJ could have been. I posted clips showing you exactly what he WAS! You can't just focus on the later, weaker MJ and ignore all the years of brilliance before then. That is totally unfair. The clips I posted clearly show a phenomenal LIVE singer and performer. Listen to the Jacksons Live album. It is a full length concert, it's all live and Michael is simply on fire. Just in a league all by himself. The fact that he went downhill later on doesn't change the fact that he was, in his day, possibly the best song and dance man of all time. GM, by contrast, has no magic, no dynamism. He's an ordinary bloke with an okay voice giving ordinary performances.

And you say you can't hear colour when you hear music, but that's naive. Pretty much all white soul singers openly admit that they try to sound black. Some of them are more successful than others. Rod Stewart and Darryl Hall for instance do pretty well. GM, not so much, but he's a great songwriter and I love the Faith album. "Father Figure" is a masterpiece. It puts MJ to shame, but George is not a genius. MJ, as a performer, certainly was. I actually think Madonna used the correct word when she described his talent in the early days as "unearthly". It truly was spooky that someone so young could be so gifted. The fact that he became such an innovator in later years was unexpected. That shouldn't have happened, but Michael's ambition and hunger made it happen. Now, pretty much EVERYONE ON THIS WEBSITE knows I can diss Michael all day, so this is not fan talk! It's real talk. You need to forget about the Michael of later years. That wasn't Michael Jackson. It was a ghost.

you have to compare like for like, we aren't comparing the child GM against the child MJ, we are comparing adult career to adult career. obviously from what you say, you agree that MJ had lost it during his adult career and couldn't hold a candle to someone like GM when it comes to live vocal performance for a full solo show

whofarted Are you feeling okay? I just posted two clips of MJ as a full grown man, not as a child. Since when is a man in his twenties considered a child? eek

And you've already lost this argument because you haven't even attempted to deny that GM could never in his wildest dreams hope to match the MJ you see in those clips. If you agree that GM can't match that level then this argument is over (and I could fill up this thread with many more examples of MJ at his best from many different points in his career).

the last comment is the perfect example of why folks think you MJ fans are loonys. how do you expect anyone to take your comments seriously with comments like that?

falloff LOL! You think I'm one of the MJ fanatics? How long have you been on this website for? lol Dude, I slam these MJ loons all the time. I'm starting to think you must be ill or something 'coz there can be no other excuse for such cluelessness.

And that comment of mine you're referring to obviously went totally over your head. It basically meant that by the end MJ became a shadow of his former self. A "ghost" if you will. It's hardly a controversial statement. I'll remember in future to spell out every metaphor in detail for you. We don't want to see you any more confused than you already are. comfort

MJ is of course a far greater talent than dear old George. But George does beat him in one area. He's a better songwriter. But MJ's created far more intoxicating moments on record than George (his adlibs particularly). His records are also better produced, but credit for that mostly goes to others. As producers themselves they're about even.

you seem to have a problem understanding what people are trying to tell you. when you understand, come back and rejoin the conversation. twisting and misunderstanding peoples words, either on purpose or by lack of intelligence, does not make an enjoyable conversation

for now...

Ever since Michael Jackson’s death, there has been a wave of media hype to announce that Michael Jackson is the most talented musician that has ever lived, easily beating out Mozart, John Lennon, Elvis Presley, Prince and just about everybody else. It’s natural that an untimely death brings out a lot of sympathy, but this has gone too far.
Michael Jackson was a talented entertainer. Perhaps, he was the most talented entertainer of the 1980s. However, in terms of being a musician, he comes nowhere as close to Prince, who actually played his own instruments and never had to lip-synch on stage. Prince also didn’t have to rely on producers such as Quincy Jones; he wrote, produced, and played most of the instruments on all of his albums.
While it is easy to be fond of Michael Jackson’s accomplishments, it is also shocking to be hearing the false accolades he has been given. What’s next? Is Michael going to called a greater humanitarian than Mother Theresa? Is Michael Jackson going to be praised for ending World War II?

i think that sums things up well

How does it feel (How does it feel)
How does it feel
How does it feel
How does it feel
How does it feel (How does it feel now)
How does it feel
How does it feel
When you're alone
And you're cold inside

Like stranger in Moscow
Like stranger in Moscow
We're talkin' danger
We're talkin' danger, baby
Like stranger in Moscow
We're talkin' danger
We're talkin' danger, baby
Like stranger in Moscow
I'm live in lonely
I'm live in lonely, baby
Stranger in Moscow

[KGB interrogator - Russian to English Translation]
"Why have you come from the West?
Confess! To steal the great achievments of
the people, the accomplishments of the workers..."

I totally agree, since he died, this is the song that I can't stop playing, there is just so much emotion, I think that this is one of his most underrated songs.
Lady Cab Driver is one of the greatest songs ever!

you seem to have a problem understanding what people are trying to tell you. when you understand, come back and rejoin the conversation. twisting and misunderstanding peoples words, either on purpose or by lack of intelligence, does not make an enjoyable conversation

Is Michael Jackson going to be praised for ending World War II?

falloff Fool, it is YOU who don't understand what is being said. Your comprehension skills are no better than the worst floon. The fact that you posted a blog excerpt that I would agree with entirely as (presumably) some kind of argument against me shows that you haven't understood a word I've posted.

And dude, if you actually want people to read your posts in future I suggest you start using capital letters at the start of your sentences and when using names or words like "I". I'm sure I'm not the only person who skips over many of your posts because of the absence of this basic tool. Is the CAPS LOCK button broken on your computer?

it's an article from a well known publications official website. i don't care what you think or agree with, just ignore my posts and stop your stupid trolling, baiting, flaming and insults. no one cares about your opinions but yourself. you posts make you seem as deluded as the craziest fool, but i think you are doing this intentionally to try and wind people up

Loved the Madonna tribute. There's something really wrong about the cast of "Hair" needing to read the lyrics to "I'll Be There." disbelief
