Frank Zappa, David Bowie, Santana...album suggestions for me.

I want to start exploring these artists. Does have any album that stands out in particular by these artists that I should check out?

Thanks.

frank zappa :: apostrophe, joe's garage or sheik yerbouti
david bowie :: ziggy stardust, low, or the singles
santana :: abraxas, greatest hits or caravanserai

just personal favorites of mine. smile can't go wrong with any type of "greatest hits" collections to get the flavor of an artist.

$.02.

I would agree on the Bowie suggestions. Anything from '71-'80 actually would be fine. That was his golden age. But I would definitely pick up Heathen or any one of his 90's albums to get the full range of what his career is about.

yeah... bowie is such a difficult one to prescribe, so many ch-ch-ch-ch-changes. smile

let's dance, scary monsters, "heroes", station to station, outside and especially EARTHLING are good ones too.

so right. best bet for bowie is to start off with a greatest hits compilation. the latest 2 cd set is ideal. from there pick the ones you like and get those records.
they're all different in style and sound. i personally love "lets dance", "earthing", and "tonight".
bravo to discovering bowie. he's timeless.

I'm not familiar with Santana (oops!) but for Zappa you can try pretty much anything from his first 10 years (most of his truly great work was done in that period.) As for Bowie, Ziggy Stardust, Hunky Dory, Low, Heathen, Scary Monsters and Aladdin Sane are probably his finest.

The only one I am familiar with is David Bowie (he's actually my favorite artist!). He was just as prolific in the 70's as Prince was in the 80's, and much more consistent in terms of quality. I recommend Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, Diamond Dogs, Station To Station, Low, Heroes, and Scary Monsters. You simply cannot go wrong with any of those albums (Low is my personal favorite...)

End.

Ah,man! You missed out Hunky Dory. I hope that was a mistake.

Hunky Dory is definitely worth getting for the following songs:

Changes
Oh You Pretty Things
Life On Mars
Quicksand
The Bewlay Brothers

Those are classic songs. However, I don't think the album is as consistent as the others I mentioned, overall. Apart from the closing track, there's nothing on the second side that I really like (that "tribute" sequence does nothing for me). Still, those five songs are all essential...

End.

folks have given you good suggestions, but my faves (for what it is worth):

frank zappa - absolutely free, hot rats, the grand wazoo, apostrophe, one size fits all, lather, zappa in new york.

david bowie - ziggy stardust, alladin sane, diamond dogs, david live, station to station

santana - santana (1rst album with lion on cover),abraxas, moonflower, love devotion and surrender.

the great thing about the artists that you've asked about is that you can just sort of pick most anything and probably get something pretty good. good luck.

Moonbeam

David Bowie- Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, the Berlin trilogy or Scary Monsters would be the best to start.

I can tel you that I just bought Bowie's "Black Tie, White Noise". DON'T start there! I have most of his more modern discs and a few collections. I thinkyou have to get "Heathen". You can find it really cheap (about $10) in most stores now (probably becuase it didn't sell very well by Columbia standards).

Let's Dance is ok.

Never Let Me Down is worse than both the above.
