The "New York City" Set

This was inspired by whatsgoingon's post about the song Native New Yorker

Being an actual "native New Yorker", this set includes a few tunes that resonate with me based on my memories of The Big Apple.

...Autumn in New York - Billie Holiday

...Brooklyn (Owes The Charmer Under Me) & Daddy Don't Live in That NYC No More - Steely Dan

...Coney Island Baby - Tom Waits

...Summer In The City - The Lovin' Spoonful (original) & Quincy Jones

...Take The "A" Train - Duke Ellington

...New York City - Gil Scott-Heron & Brian Jackson

...Harlem - Bill Withers

...Bleeker Street - Simon & Garfunkel

...Positively 4th Street - Bob Dylan

...New York State of Mind - Billy Joel

Awesome.

I was turned on to this song after it was featured on an episode of Mad Men (I know, I didn't need to wait that long):

Manhattan - Ella Fitzgerald

Love it and the images of old New York City it brings to mind.

Very nice choice.

It's amazing that no matter old she got, her voice always retained the quality of a very young lady.

Depending on their age, you'd think so.

Thanks for the thread.

I’m listening to all this music when I should be doing other things. But those other things aren’t nearly as much fun. wink

Themes like this could keep the org flowing for months/years.

Not that I was gonna do it 'cos I know how theAudience feels about the genre, but I'm surprised no one has posted any classic hip hop yet.

...This is a Christian house, boy. No hippity-hop language in here.

Just kidding. wink

Go for it. Everyone's experience is different.

I should have thought of this one. It's from my favorite PJ album. Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea was all inspired by New York City, no?
