I'd recommend "Caravanserai" (1972), "Amigos" (1976), "Moonflower" (1977), and "Blues For Salvador" (1987)

Carlos is an amazing man both inside and out. He should be at the top of all these best guitar lists IMO. His music is beautiful without pretension. Check out his live in Mexico dvd, it's awesome.

I loved how in the middle of "Europa" Carlos goes into Marvin Gaye's "I Want You" and on "Oye Como Va" the band riffs Yes' "Owner Of A Lonley Heart"

All of those albums are excellent.I think my second favorite Santana album is 'Festival' (1977).It picks up where 'Amigos' left off....alot of funky, soulful rhythms throughout.

Dirty Chris, you might also check out "Divine Light," Bill Laswell's reconfiguration of Santana's "Illuminations" and "Love Devotion Surrender."

I like Santana but for someone with his musical background, he's been playing the same licks for forty years. Omar Rodriguez-Lopez is a much more interesting guitar player and writer, in my honest opinion.
