Patti LaBelle is a singer, so a guest appearance by her would probably involve something like singing a hook. Missy is a rapper and singer, so her guest appearances usually involve both singing and rapping. That is all. [Edited 5/26/09 13:54pm] Yeah she did say that, lol. I get it but that was still a weird lyric to me. Oh well.

I always thought Patti was an interesting example to use since she isn't known for her guest appearances -- I can only think of Fourplay's cover of "After the Dance" off the top of my head -- but I always interpreted it as, "I don't wanna just sing; let me rap, too." Still don't make sense to me to mention Patti it's not apples to apples. [Edited 5/26/09 14:02pm]

Up to that point on the song, Missy was only singing the hook, so she's basically saying that she wants to rap, too. Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! I mean, yeah, I get it, "why you got me singing hooks?"
I'm not trying to be sensitive that she used Patti's name like that, it could've been very well a compliment. Who knows? But I don't know if she was on enough hooks as a singer then she was as a rapper. In fact, the only thing I remember about her guest appearance on a song by someone named Gina Thompson, she wasn't singing but she was going "yee-hee-hee-hee, ya" or something like that. That's the ONLY thing people remembered and then she got on songs basically rapping. She only sung on occasion ("Cold Rock a Party" and this song).

Let's see... That's What Little Girls Are Made Of - Raven Symone [OK, let's not mention this one] The Things You Do - Gina Thompson Steelo - 702 Cold Rock a Party - MC Lyte Do Thangz (Main Pass Remix) - Men of Vizion You Don't Have to Worry (Remix) - New Edition She rapped on all of those but most of the singing was backing vocals. Of course, she was all over most of Aaliyah's One in a Million "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

I just realized this year that she was SINGING in the background on the Do Thangz remix in the beginning of the song! I don't think she sang on Raven's track or Gina's or 702's or New Edition's tho.

Well, a little singing in the NE track ("hit 'em with the hee"), but yeah, you're right. She didn't really start singing a lot (well, since the Sista days) until her debut album. Let's stroll down memory lane. Missy had a pretty busy '96 for someone without an album: The Things You Do (Bad Boy Remix) Steelo (Remix) Do Thangz (Main Pass Remix) http://www.youtube.com/wa...BYDTyGuWVQ You Don't Have to Worry (Bad Boy Remix) Amazingly, the remix of "Cold Rock a Party" isn't on YouTube at all. She sure did. That's how I heard about her. People kept saying "when's her album coming out" then when it did come out, everybody had to have it! That video made me get it. I realized who was the original sample like a year or two afterwards, lol.

I was hoping for a story when 1996 was when you went into the Hitsville vaults after hearing Missy Nah I first got the knowledge when I was 13. In '97, that's when Puffy started just sampling as if he was PASTING the motherfucking songs on there. It was hard to NOT know what track was sampled from "My Life" on down! That's when I began my dislike of Puff the Un-Magic One. I got really pissed when he sampled Led Zeppelin and I didn't even know Led Zep like that! Missy wasn't on a song with a R&B sample as far as I know besides "Cold Rock" until "Supa Dupa Fly".

I like how everyone missed the fact that Angie Martinez dropped 2 albums. But it's cool. The more successful one spawned the single "If I Could Go". Has a video and all. Then she resumed her successful DJ/hosting career. Love is 2 Weak 2 Define, Just What U Mean 2 Me - ADORE

It interests me that while Missy has been a decent rapper (far from one of the best), writer and producer, that she was at best a marginal singer. Also since when Patti sing just hooks? This is a diva we're talking about. I guess at the time, some rappers were so cocky they say anything. I heard a few talking about "man who you think I am, Marvin Gaye or Smokey Robinson or some shit?" But I'm sure we'd be like "n***a, you ain't no damn Smokey!"
