Some Poles outraged Madonna to perform on holy day

(AP) – 12 hours ago

WARSAW, Poland — Madonna's "Sticky & Sweet" tour brings her to Poland's capital on Aug. 15, the Catholic holiday celebrating the heavenly assumption of the Virgin Mary. That's sparking criticism and plans for protests in the Roman Catholic country.

Marian Brudzynski, the leader of the Catholic group Committee for the Protection of Faith and National Traditions, said Thursday he is outraged by the timing. He plans two weeks of protests starting July 31 in downtown Warsaw.

Poland's ombudsman, Janusz Kochanowski, has asked Warsaw city officials to explain why the singer would be allowed to perform on a date bound to provoke and offend.

Even former President Lech Walesa, a Catholic and father of eight, says he would like the concert rescheduled.

For the hell of me I cannot understand why those religious people (of any faith not just catholics) insist that everybody should stop doing what they would do normally. Back in the 80s Greece wasn't going to Eurovision when it was coinciding with the Greek Orthodox Easter. This is similar. I mean respect is one thing but pushing your beliefs on others like that is another

yeah, sure, but it's not like this is a major Catholic holiday. maybe it is in Poland, but i was raised Catholic and i didn't even know this WAS a holiday.

plus, with all the religions around the world and all of the minor holidays that pop up on every single day on the calender... were they to ALL be observed, there wouldn't be any time do do ANYTHING except sit around and observe minor regional religious holidays.

I thought that would be Malta. Divorce was legalized in the mid-90s over there.

i on't know about Malta, but this is what I got about Catholicism and Poland:

Cath: 96%

religious : 96%

unreligious: 2,9

atheists: 1

This is not achieved in any other European country (or the EU). Is Malta a member of the EU?

Hmmm I don't doubt for a minute that Poland is a strongly Catholic country but I think that its reputation for that is a bit overblown because it is much more religious than its neighbors and because the ex Pope was from there. But I would like to see their religiosity compared with other strongly religious countries in the EU such as Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Italy and Malta or even with strong Orthodox countries such as Greece and Cyprus to see who comes on top. That poll says nothing at all. People tend to answer wrong on those polls depending on what is the proper thing to say. People will say they are religious when they are not and vise versa.
Yes Malta is in the EU since 2004 and in Shenghen and the Eurozone since 2008. It is one of only three (the other two are Slovenia and Slovakia) of the 12 members which joined in 2004 and 2007 to participate in all three of those clubs.

i can send you the report, the figures are from 1993. But I'm sure there wasn't a major change over the last 16 years.

youre right, those reports can be critized. People could lie and stuff. But I doubt 70% of the Poles lied. It depends on how the interview was taken.

Face-to-face? Via telephone? Was it per letter? Anonymous?

the full Celebrate lyrics

Celebrate

I think you wanna’ come over, yeah I heard it through the grapevine.
Are you drunk or you sober? Think about it, doesn’t matter
and if it makes you feel good then I say do it,
I don’t know what you’re waiting for

Feel my temperature rising
There’s too much heat I’m gonna’ lose control
Do you want to go higher, get closer to the fire,
I don’t know what you’re waiting for

Come join the party, yeah
Coz’ everybody just won’t do.
Let’s get this started, yeah
Coz’ everybody wants to party with you.

Boy you got a reputation, but you’re gonna’ have to prove it
I see a little hesitation,
Am I gonna’ have to show you that if it feels right, get on your marks
Step to the beat boy that’s what it’s for

Put your arms around me
When it gets too hot we can go outside
But for now just come here, let me whisper in your ear
An invitation to the dance tonight

Come join the party, it’s a celebration
Anybody just won’t do
Let’s get this started, no more hesitation
Coz’ everybody wants to party with you

Haven’t I seen you somewhere before?
You look familiar…
You wanna’ dance? …Yeah.
I guess I just don’t recognize you with your cloths on… (laughs)
What are you waiting for?

Come join the party, it’s a celebration
Anybody just won’t do
Let’s get this started, no more hesitation
Coz’ everybody wants to party with you X 2

Boy you’ve got it, it’s a celebration
Coz’ anybody just won’t do
Let’s get it started, no more hesitation
Coz’ everybody wants to party with you

Boy you’ve got it
Coz’ anybody just won’t do
Let’s get it started, no more hesitation
Coz’ everybody wants to party with you
