Best band of the 1980s? We all know Prince was the solo artist of the 1980s but who in your opinion were the band of the 1980s.
IMO The Smiths were the band of the 1980s. The Smiths - Bassist Andy Rourke, Guitarist Johnny Marr, Drummer Mike Joyce and fronted by vocalist/lyricist the incomparable Stephen Patrick Morrissey were only around for less than five years yet their music dwarfs any other band in that decade. So who do you think were the best band of the 1980s?

Duran Duran.
String of hits, splintered into two groups, then back to Duran Duran and still had hits each way around. I don't think their popularity ever really waned.

The Smiths are definitely up there for me!
My choice would be a two-way tie between The Cure and Eurythmics (if they count). The color, depth and diversity that The Cure displayed in the 80s is nothing short of mind-boggling to me, and the insular, intense brand of freezing-cold synth pop that Eurythmics brandished in the early 80s was unmatched, in my opinion. After those two, I'd go with: Siouxsie and the Banshees New Order Depeche Mode The Smiths Human League [Edited 5/16/09 18:56pm] Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!

U2 were probably the best band of the 1980s followed closely by Men at Work.

Probably The Smiths. But how can you compare a group like The Smiths with a group like The Time? They're about completely different things. Impossible to compare, but if we're talking serious art, I think you have to go with The Smiths. “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”

They're now bubbling under for me, but they would have been at or near the top at one time. Unsatisfied still gets my nod as song of the decade, however.

Inxs REM U2 a-ha Duran Duran Bon Jovi all brought different things to the table and all (especially a-Ha) have grown into amazing musicians, writers and performers "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

It's hard for me to separate my favorite from the 'best' so the bellow will be the ones that are what I consider to be the best, but may not necessarily be my favorite.
My favorite are bolded in the list: Rush The Smiths (my favorite band) Metallica Joy Division The Police They Might Be Giants REM U2 10,000 Maniacs Sonic Youth to name a few I would never place Duran Duran on the 'best of' anything... And I like Duran Duran.

album number 10 comes out June 19th, they are big everywhere but here still, america has been exiled, they sound nothing like that "keyboard" pop band anymore, the keyboards were sold long ago= "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

Yeah, since they debuted in 1987, they really covered the whole of the decade.
