I'm calling it... Bat For Lashes "Daniel" is the song of the year

This song does something to me.

Maybe it's that so many of the elements recall "A Forest" by The Cure.

Maybe it's the words that absolutely slay me.

Maybe it's that this is the most perfectly realized pop song by one of the most beautiful, haunting and gifted multi-instrumentalists around.

Maybe it's her voice.

Maybe cuz she's hot.

Thank you Ian for hipping me to this. I can't get enough of it. The whole album is wondeful, but this is it right here.

Check her out.

SHIT! I knew there was something musical I was forgetting.

This is why I've started writing shit down. lol Too many things get lost in the shuffle with me being so stressed/busy/scatterbrained lately. Going to check her out. Like what I've heard/seen previously (though I can't even see that there's anything posted on this thread on my work computer - damn restrictions!).

Yeah, you can tell by the end of the video and from the single cover. But it really is so much more than that. I never think of him when I hear this song.

Well, it's kinda like if Bjork were singing "A Forest" as produced by Kate Bush. So it's kinda good, if you can imagine.

I am also like u regarding Alanis Morissettes song "Wunderkind". I know its predominately about the storyline of The Chronicles Of Narnia, but 2 me, I feel that the song was written specifically about me and my life and the whole of humanity in general!! Songs like that deeply touch me and move me beyond what words can say!!! Songs like this touch me physically, mentally, emotionally and most of all spiritually!!! biggrin biggrin

ps 2: the album is good but it ain't got shit on her 1st album "fur and gold",
which is in my top 5 of best albums since 2000.

ps 3: apart from covering the fuck out of "a forrest", she's also done live
versions of sweet dreams (are made of this) and i'm on fire [springsteen],
both of which are great. sweet dreams is especially brilliant.

Definitely agree. Now, this is a song with a lasting impact! Her multi-instrumentalist chops and sense of style are wonderful! I definitely prefer Two Suns to her debut (which I also liked), but with "Daniel", she has taken it to Björk-like levels of greatness.

I love the whole album but Daniel is incredible. She reminds me of many people ~ Bjork comes to mind first (and I don't say this lightly ~ it takes a lot to reach that status for me), Imogen Heap, a touch of Liz Fraser are a few.

Ohhh I like that version.

I like "Daniel" but let's be honest: her second album falls short of her first.
Don't get me wrong it's still good. But the first album was perfect, raw, eerie.

Just compare "What's a girl to do" with "Daniel." (or compare it to "Prescilla") Both music and video.

From the new album I like
Moon and Moon
Daniel
Siren Song
Pearl's Dream (second single?)

I think the second album is better than the first- it's more accomplished and sounds more effortless. Don't get me wrong, I like me some Fur and Gold, but the new one tops it for me.

To me the first one is lyrically and musically more sophisticated.
The second is too Tori Amos for me.

i have to agree with that. the first album is absolutely magic and otherworldly.
the new album is a very good record but it fails to enchant and bewitch me like
the debut album.

It is song of the year for me so far as well -- it's just beautiful.

As for her -- she's gorgeous, I've always thought so. If I were into girls she would be totally be my type.

As for Empire of the Sun -- love them!!! How can you not love songs like "Half Mast"?! There isn't a video but just listen to it, love it. heart

Yeah, I like this song. I heard it was inspired by "Running Up That Hill". She was trying to write something that evoked that same feeling. I think she came pretty close.

hmmm You're right. And at some points she sounds like Kate Bush. Interesting.

She's fairly bangable too. As Leonard Cohen would say... "Halelujah!"
