Black Eyes Peas #1, Dave Matthews Band and Eminem Duke It Out for #2

Ouch. eek --> The beginnig of the end is right.

THE BEGINNING OF THE E.N.D.

Black Eyes Peas #1, Dave Matthews Band and Eminem Duke It Out for #2

June 10, 2009

Boom. Boom. Pow.

The sound you heard is the Black Eyed Peas landing at #1 on next week’s HITS Album sales chart with a total anywhere between 190-215k for their new album, The E.N.D.

Considering how many singles the band has sold, that total has got to be considered a disappointment to record retailers out there who still have their shirts, with most of ‘em presumably gathered in the sunny climes of San Diego for this week’s NARM convention.

But look on the bright side. Based on those same one-day sales reports, this week’s chart-topper RCA’s Dave Matthews Band and Interscope’s dope rapper Eminem will have an old-fashioned street battle for #2, with both in the 115-125k range, so at least there will be three six-figures albums astride next week’s Top 50.

That'll give the cat in the hat, Jimmy Iovine, at least two of the top three and maybe even the top two.

Next highest debut will be Atlantic’s Pleasure P at 35-40k, Sony Music Latin’s Aventura (25-30k), Downtown’s Mos Def (25-30k) and Stax/Concord Music Group’s Teena Marie (15-20k).

Next week, Disney’s Jonas Brothers are back with Lines, Vines and Trying Times, their tribute to Neil Diamond, Kings of Leon, Elvis Costello and the Zutons, according to the bros.

The market was up 11% vs. last week, down 16% vs. same week last year and now down 14% year to date. All we can say is… Stay thirsty, my friends.

wow, that is low for BEPs. Don't really like them, but they are so poppish that I assumed they'd sell like hotcakes.

I don't know man I don't understand why they are popular. I think maybe the sales are the result of double scanning or some record company hi-jinks. I do know anyone who likes these guys.

They are very popular for high schoolers and suburbia. People I know like them..but not all their music.

I am just appreciative that they are better than mainstream rap music...they are a cross between a dance group and a rap group and a ...

I am shocked that the Peas didnt do at least double what these estimates are. They have stifling radio airplay and appeal to a wie demographic. You just simply cantescape the Peas. Im sure this album wont be a flop though.

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - The Black Eyed Peas scored their first No. 1 album on the U.S. pop charts on Wednesday, buoyed by heavy promotion for their first release in four years, and also claimed the top two spots on the singles chart.

The hip-hop act topped the Billboard 200 with "The E.N.D.," which sold 304,000 copies during the week ended June 14, according to Nielsen SoundScan, the group's best sales week ever.

Their previous set, 2005's "Monkey Business," bowed at No. 2 with a then-best 291,000. Believe it or not, the Black Eyes Peas have hit the top 10 only twice: their first two releases -- 1998's "Behind the Front" and 2000's "Bridging the Gap" -- both missed the top 50. It wasn't until the group recruited Fergie for "Elephunk" in 2003 that it hit the big time. That album, powered by three top-40 singles, peaked at No. 14 and spent 106 weeks on the chart.

It was hard not to know that the Black Eyed Peas had a new album last week, thanks to heavy promotion from Target. The retailer carried an exclusive version of the album that featured additional tracks and flooded the airwaves with a commercial touting the new set.

Over on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, the Peas debuted at No. 2 with "I Gotta Feeling" and held at No. 1 for an 11th week with "Boom Boom Pow." It's the first time any act has occupied the top two slots on the Hot 100 with songs from the No. 1 album of the week since OutKast did it in February 2004. They were Nos. 1 and 2 on the Hot 100 with "Hey Ya!" and "The Way You Move," respectively, while "Speakerboxxx/The Love Below" spent its seventh (and final week) atop the Billboard 200.

I was a big fan of BEP before "You-Know-Who" arrived. Yeah, they sold a lot of records, but at what cost?
