TIMMY! I need some suggestions on Marvin I liked what you said about feeling his pain in Grapevine. Can you suggest some other songs with sadness and pain? Some underrated stuff would be great, as I know a lot of songs from What's Going On already.

If it's sadness and pain you want don't look any further than 1978's "Hear My Dear" a.k.a. The Divorce Album

Listen to the entire "Here, My Dear" album and his "Vulnerable" album, both recorded in 1978. These songs showcased a lot of that pain you were talking about.

Yeah I love his jazz material. This album was his finest in that department. [Edited 4/11/09 11:57am]

I listened to some of it, it's nice, but it hasn't grabbed me yet like the midnight love album and grapevine

That's because you won't get the same type of feel, I guess, it's a different type of album, I guess. Marvin loved recording it.

Timmy and alphastreet, have you heard the album "Dream of a Lifetime" that was released shortly after Marvin's death? The title cut on that album is one of, if not THE, saddest song I've heard by him. Maybe it was because it WAS right after he died, but his voice is beautiful and the liner notes include these lyrics from the song:
So if the picture I paint Makes me a sinner, makes me a saint I won't try, not not I To deny it. I may cry with the past But it's easier to laugh about it I thank God for my wonderful life. Never trust anything spoken in the presence of an erection.

Yes I have. He originally was going to get that song to Sammy Davis during his brief time in the label but he ended up recording it. I think this was recorded in 1973.
