If only Prince had the insight Amanda Palmer (from The Dresden Dolls) has

http://lefsetz.com/wordpr...he-day-14/

i had to EXPLAIN to the so-called "head of digital media" of roadrunner australia WHAT TWITTER WAS. and his brush-off that "it hasn’t caught on here yet" was ABSURD because the next day i twittered that i was doing an impromptu gathering in a public park and 12 hours later, 150 underage fans - who couldn’t attend the show - showed up to get their records signed.

no manager knew! i didn’t even warn or tell her! no agents! no security! no venue! we were in a fucking public park!
life is becoming awesome.

also interesting: i brought a troupe of back-up actors/dancers on the tour (we were only playing 300-1000 seaters) and had no money to pay them, so we passed the hat into the crowd every night. each performer walked from each show with about $200 in cash. the fans TOOK CARE OF THEM. they brought us dinner every night, gave us places to sleep. (i couldn’t afford to put up that many people in hotels). all sans label, all using email and twitter. the fans followed the adventure. they LOVED HELPING.

so?

the times they are a-changing fucking dramatically, when pong-twittering with trent reznor means way more to your fan-base/business than whether or not the record is in fucking stores (and in my case, it ain’t in fucking stores).

twitter is EVERYTHING that you explain in your rants: it is a MAINLINE insta-connection with the fans. there is ZERO middleman.

my fans hung out with me all day on twitter today while i unpacked weird tour shit, fan art, gifts and paraphernalia that usually just ends up in my closet or in the trash and took pictures of it for them.

I like Amanda Palmer, but the hype is a little much. She's definitely the hawt like OMG she rocks!!! Indie-boi flavor of the moment.

Prince has been an industry leader for 30 years. I think he's doing aiiight and probably doesn't need the "insight" of Amanda Palmer. But i'm sure he appreciates the concern.

Bart, you've made your point. At this stage, your insistence on this topic is arguably sadder than Prince's failure to be on the cutting edge of the internet. Let it go man.

Yeah and why does Bart care if his profile says he's "not a fan"? He's just a puzzling as Prince himself.

as much as I love Bart being on here I can't see the point of aiming this at only Prince. If it's an attcak on P not embracing current technology for promotion and thus give fans greater access then aim the criticism at many other artists out there who also have not embraced it. Looking at the example you gave , this is the kinda of stunt P should do if he were just starting out. Like it or not P is a big draw now regardless of your opinions of his music.
Come on Bart, you're better than this!. sad

Hey now, I don't like Bart much either, but you've gone too far. He may have too much time on his hands, but to suggest that he's capable of murder? That's uncalled for.

Wrong.

His behavior reeks of those who are obsessed to a point where he should be determined as dangerous imo.

It does not matter if anyone "likes" or "dislikes" Bart.

If this was any other type of board the warning would have been made some time ago and his name would have been put on alert.

You are entitled to your opinion just as I am.

So your "opinion" is that Bart is a dangerous psychopath awaiting his change to meet and/or murder Prince? What do base that on, doctor? Honestly, you can couch your slander in "opinion" all you like, but that's truly offensive thing to say about someone.

This isn't about that. It's about concrete thinking, 'all or none' maladaptive cognitions, and decades old obsession.

I dont expect you to get that since you are fixated on those who judge Prince with extreme prejudice though you 'try' to disguise it with attmepts at appearing as an ambivalent poster. I see you. [That comment is uncalled for snip - luv4u]

i just comment on what i see. bart is bart. he hasn't changed since i hung around here ten years ago. but there are threads about him here every day. i don't mean threads he starts, i mean threads that other people start, about him.

there is easily as much complaining about complainers going on here at the org as there is complaining about prince.

there are whole threads here devoted to complaining about complainers.

it's like a prince song or something. biggrin

I don't think Bart said anything terrible here on this post.

Look I agree on his point, but I also know and understand Prince has also taken a lot of risks with new ways to reach fans..... Prince's execution and fulfillment to his plan has not always been stellar.

I think it is natural when you are passionate about an artist to speak of weakness's you think could be changed with another's input, with Prince obviously someone other than himself.

There are tons of good business models out there. I often think if they would just open their eyes some artists could really achieve success not found since the 80's, but I guess in the end it's what the artist wants.

Some examples:
Ani Difranco's label
Phish live series
NIN The Slip
Radiohead in Rainbows.
