Bill Callahan's Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle is my favourite album of the year by far.

I also really like the new Handsome Family & Pet Shop Boys records.

According to my rateyourmusic ratings for stuff this year, my favorites are:

Prince - Lotus Flow3r starstarstarstar & 1/2
Bon Iver - Blood Bank EP starstarstarstar & 1/2
Prince - MPLSound starstarstarstar
Platinum Pied Pipers - Abundance starstarstarstar
Melinda Doolittle - Coming Back To You starstarstarstar
Antony & The Johnsons - starstarstarstar
Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion starstarstarstar
U2 - No Line On The Horizon starstarstar & 1/2
Morrissey - Years Of Refusal starstarstar & 1/2

oh dear. i still haven't made it past these. still hung up on Prince, for better or worse.

i guess i did manage to get around to listening to Andrew Bird's "Noble Beast" before that. (starstarstar & 1/2)

things are piling up, though. i've currently got Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, PJ Harvey, Peaches, Doves, Peaches, and now Bat For Lashes to get around to. but i'm expecting good things from most of them, so i want to wait until i can give them the proper attention.

I had a listen to Bat For Lashes for the first time. It might be just me but isn't it horribly pretentious!?!?

No! It's fully realized and wonderful.

The Bill Callahan record is mopey country-folk rock, and really a very lovely album. He recorded for years under the name Smog (or occasionally (smog)), and he's been one of my favourite performers for quite some time now.

The Handsome Family are gothic country - not up your alley in the least, I'd expect.

Yes is a classic-sounding PSB record - their best set of melodies in ages and some really good dance-floor stompers.
