Marvin cancelled the original 'Love Man' album because he thought that the lyrics were "jive" lol I guess he wanted to go back and re-work the songs and create a more meaningful album,as opposed to a throwaway party album.

That's EXACTLY what he did. Marvin was disappointed with "Love Man" so he shelved it. Motown wanted it out.

I like the idea of Marvin doing a fun, party album at the height of the disco era lol I was thinking that it would be like his 1977 hit "Got To Give It Up"...a complete album in that vein.

But see, this is why Marvin was a divided soul. He felt he did GTGIU as a reluctant commercial commodity. I think he found it hard to express his artistry the way he felt and he always had to compromise with Motown so that his point of view would come out in different ways. That's why things worked out in HIS favor after he reluctantly agreed to follow the R&B market in the 1960s (before soul music became SOUL MUSIC, you understand?) but afterwards he would feel conflicted because he felt he didn't need Motown's force to get him to do records. So even if he wasn't on drugs, he probably would've changed his mind about doing a full-fledged dance record anyway. Plus he feared his fans would think he had sold out. And this is the SOUL MUSIC community I'm talking about. I don't think his pop fans would've gave a shit, lol.

OMG...

I've been into Mr. Gaye like crazy lately. So soulful.
I even got the What's Going On DVD. And... What a life, man! I loved that documentary!!
I wish it were longer.

I'm listening to Here, My Dear right now... Great album, Great vocals, very underrated IMO.

I wonder if his earlier albums are gonna receive the remaster treatment they deserve (When I'm alone, I cry, for example.)

What would this man be doing now if he were alive?? we'll never know.

RIP. sad

Guess what I've got in my hot little hand right now?

Yup!

The expanded edition of "In Our Lifetime."

I FINALLY went out & bought it. lol

At the moment I've only skimmed through the liner notes, which then makes me ask a certain "Timmy84," why didn't you correct me?

The opening lyrics to "In Our Lifetime" are "Come let's all get funky, if you TAKE the right." I thought he was saying "If you DIG the right."

And you call yourself a Marvin Gaye fan..for shame! lol

Nah, just kidding, it's all irie, mon....seen.

Sorry, listenin to reggae again over here. lol

Yeah that live album's actually great. I loved his "Fossil Medley" from that album. The fans really got into it when he got to certain songs (like "Try It Baby" for instance, I did NOT expect those cheers, lol!).

Cool,I'm gonna pick it up tomorrow.

What about 'Vulnerable'? Is that a good album? I have another CD called 'Love Starved Heart'.It's a compilation of jazz songs recorded by Marvin in the late 60s.Are you familiar with that one?

"Vulnerable" is a great album, just that this one was recorded in the 1970s so you'll get a different record than the '60s record you're expecting. lol

"Love Starved Heart" is not a jazz song compilation, least the one I have, this one is filled of Marvin's Motown recordings that he never released.

I actually haven't listened to 'Love Starved Heart' in years boxed I forgot what it sounds like.I don't know why,but I thought it was a jazzy standards-type of disc.I have it as part of a 4-CD box set that was released in 1994.The other discs in this set are 'Let's Get It On','Trouble Man' and 'I Want You'.

I listened to it constantly a month or two ago and it is not jazzy at all, it's very much steep in the soul tradition of Marvin's sixties classics. cool

This is becoming ridiculous lol Just when I think my collection is complete,I find out that there's yet another "special expanded edition" that I don't have.I just discovered that there is actually an expanded 'Love Starved Heart' set that includes nine additional tracks that were not on the 1994 release.I gotta look for that CD now!

nuts

Just about! lol I gotta get the Copa album but I got most of his live albums (even the bootleg 1983 concerts, lol). I got MOST of his studio work (all the duet albums), his sixties albums, I got his seventies albums, the deluxe editions, Midnight Love, I don't wanna get those posthumous 1985 releases though nor 1986's "Motown Remembers..." because they used that dated 1980s music on it and I prefer the original mixes over what was on those albums, lol.

Do you have the two box sets? One was released in 1990 but I believe it is now out of print. It has a blue cover with a pic of Marvin from the 60s.The second box set 'The Master' was released in 1995,if I'm not mistaken.I think there are some unreleased tracks on both of these sets.

I knew there was something I miss. I'm gonna get "The Master" before the year is out. I got the "Anthology Series" set tho. nod

Ok,what's the deal with 'Romantically Yours'? Released in 1986,two years after his death,it appears to be a collection of jazzy songs recorded in the late 60s....an early version of 'Vulnerable',perhaps? From reading the reviews on Amazon,it seems that alot of fans don't think too highly of this album.

Yep, this album was the original "Ballads" album but Marvin was disappointed in what he heard and when Motown wanted to shelve it, he didn't budge. After gaining creative control and discovering the power of his vocals, he re-recorded some of the songs from the sessions including some others he didn't sing initially (including "I Wish I Didn't Love You So") and came out with "Ballads" but after the disappointing response to "Here, My Dear", he shelved it from a potential 1979 release. It of course was released 18 years later as "Vulnerable". I don't recommend the "Romantically Yours" album at all. Like I said Motown and Columbia rushed to judgment to fulfill Marvin's Columbia contract (he had three albums to do in his Columbia deal).
