Damn! when is Stevie gonna finish that album?! Berry even talked about that in his book. He wanted Stevie to hurry with that album because he had just given him that HUGE record deal for like 3mil. HE wanted a return on his investment...fast!

Some of these stories about Berry Gordy are reminding of a scene from the movie "Talk To Me" starring Don Cheadle, where his character, Petey Greene calls Berry Gordy a pimp.
I searched high & low for a clip, but all I could find was this interview with Jay Leno. http://www.dailymotion.co...shortfilms Scroll over to the 4:38 mark. The scene that follows is even funnier/more controversial/shocking, but I couldn't find it anywhere! [Edited 4/2/09 6:35am] [Edited 4/2/09 6:36am]

My girlfriend bought me the DVD last year and I have yet to open it.She said I would love it because it takes place in the 70s (my favorite era).I'm soooo busy these days that I actually have to make time to watch movies.

Man, Berry didn't wanna waste time and this was a problem for his artists, Stevie and Marvin wanted to put it out in the way they feel, Berry was all about the money, lol. "Come with a record out quick". That was his motto for about 29 years when he was in control of Motown.

Now, looking back, Berry was right. It's all about keeping the artist in the public eye and keeping them current. After Berry stepped down and sold out, the label became a run-of-the-mill record company. The originiality was gone and the idea that built the label died. By the time the 90s came along, there were different types of media and forms of technology and Motown couldn't keep up. Boyz II Men kept them afloat in the 90s. Now, I don't think they have a true "cash-cow". Maybe India.Arie, but she's not selling 3 million albums. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

Nowadays, you hardly have a mogul who would try to push their artist nowadays unless they were made to be somebody else. And we're talking about a man who literally made unknowns from the street "STARS", ok? That's why you get this "wow, Motown was something else" because Berry pushed hard for his artists even if SOME pushed him back, lol.

Eventually it moves into the '70s and '80s, but it's mostly set in the '60s and it even covers the assassination of Martin Luther King. The film is brilliant. [Edited 4/2/09 14:35pm]

Never downloaded it though. I think I might do it some time this month....it's either that or fork out fifty bucks for the remastered edition of "In Our Lifetime." I got the album with the "Love Man" tracks on it, the tracks are actually probably what you would consider a rough draft of what became "In Our Lifetime" musical wise: "Life's a Game of Give and Take" - "Heavy Love Affair" "Life Is Now in Session" - "Life is For Learning" "I Offer You Nothing But Love" - "In Our Lifetime" "Just Because You're So Pretty" - "Love Me Now or Love Me Later" "Dance 'N' Be Happy" - "Love Party" "Funk Me, Funk Me, Funk Me" - "Funk Me" "A Lover's Plea" - "Praise" Marvin cancelled the original 'Love Man' album because he thought that the lyrics were "jive" I guess he wanted to go back and re-work the songs and create a more meaningful album,as opposed to a throwaway party album.

That's EXACTLY what he did. Marvin was disappointed with "Love Man" so he shelved it. Motown wanted it out.

Just downloaded the "Love Man" album.
Listening to it now. I'm finding that "Life Is Now In Session" and "Life Is For Learning" are almost exactly the same! Lyrically AND musically.

I must ask this question.....
in the song "Praise," Marvin says, "Stevie we really dig you, hope you don't mind this riff from you." Which song does he then play? I could never figure it out.

maybe that's why he gave Stevie a shout out like that, cuz he was paying tribute.
Somebody else with a musical ear can probably answer the question for us though. Anyways I'm thinking of giving the album a track for track analysis on my blog....nothing is guaranteed though.

I've been thinkin of it for a while now. I just read your review (and added my comment). And I have to say you're "right on it!" If you got the deluxe edition of "Here, My Dear" and listen to "Time to Get It Together" again, the unedited version is actually better, lol.

Cool.....thanks for that.
Again, it's about fifty bucks for the remastered edition of "Here My Dear." It's always more expensive when you convert US dollars to Australian dollars.

I think you can get a sampling of the tracks on IMEEM, they have a lot of Marvin Gaye on there. I think some songs from the "Here, My Dear" sessions were posted there.

You won't regret it, the unedited version is definitely worth it. More jazzy you might say.

Actually, Stevie was visiting Marvin during the In Our Lifetime sessions and suggested that riff for Marvin during the sessions for Praise. I can't remember if that info was in the liners or the Divided Soul biography. But that portion was written by Stevie.
