Leslie West - Mountain

A conversation with Ace rekindled my yearning for a...

...Les Paul Jr.

And subsequently, the guitarist/music that inspired the initial interest years ago...

...Leslie West of Mountain.

The first time I heard Leslie West was via a single I bought when he was a member of a local New York Young Rascals like band called...

...The Vagrants.

The single was a cover of Otis Redding's Respect...

...released in 1967 on the ATCO label

It was the B-side of I Love, Love You.
Neither tune was especially memorable but the A-side had guitar solo and the B-side had a prominent organ part.

He dropped off my radar for a few years until...

...Climbin' was released in 1970 and Mississippi Queen was all over the radio.

What a guitar sound! (Les Paul Jr + guitar cord + Sunn amp)

...Mississippi Queen

...Never In My Life (my favorite Mountain rocker)

...For Yasgur's Farm (inspired by their Woodstock Festival experience)

...Nantucket Sleighride

...Theme From An Imaginary Western (favorite Mountain ballad)

Aww man. Leslie is a true underrated great. The combo of him jamming on a LP Junior thru a Sunn Collesium or a 50 watt Marshall is pure ear candy.

He's influenced so many cats from Micheal Shencker to Ace Frehley to Joe Satriani. Tone, feel and vibrato? He's the one of the kings. I also dig how he bends a string with only 2 fingers.

He's killin' again thru his new Dean guitars and Buddha amps. He's definetly one of my all time favorites. Funny dude too.

Oh hell yeah Leslie is the man. And I always looked forward to his interviews on Howard Stern's old K-ROCK radio show. Dude is hilarious and honest about everything, including his past drug use.

Leslie is still friends with Howard and appears on the SIRIUS show every once in a while.

Howard talks very fondly of Leslie's talent and says Mountain is his favorite group.

I got hip to Leslie West when I ran across "Flowers Of Evil". Why on that album did they leave out the opening riff on "Missisippi Queen"? I know he wasn't tired of playin it yet....

Definitely one of his favorites, but has he ever said they are his favorite?

The live version of "Long Red" is one of the most important sampled records in the history of hip-hop.

I'll have to check that out.

He lost me when descended (imo) from his "Mountain" sound and went through his "Steinberger period"...disbelief

I love the mans guitar tone, it's so unique and distinctive. There's something really evil about it but in a good way. Never In My Life is my fave.

Yeah he lost me too Aud with the Steinbergers. It sounded TOO polished.

His new sound with the new gear is classic. By any chance did your conversation take place with the one and only Ace (from space)?

Eric B & Rakim for starters "Eric B Is President"...the drums are sampled throughout the entire track plus the entire record Eric B is cutting "clap" or "clap your hands to (what)" from the original lyric "well clap your hands to what he's doing." This is universally regarded as the greatest MC of all time by anyone who was there at the time, and this was his signature track, and his introduction to the world, and the samples from "Long Red (live)" form the very heart of the record. Now try to think how many times "Eric B Is President" has been sampled, you will drive yourself crazy it's probably not possible. And every beat on that track is from "Long Red (live)." The other really obvious classic hip-hop track that sampled Long Red (live) is "It's My Thing" by EPMD. There have been many others. There are shouts and stabs and drums fills any 80s hip-hop head will instantly know on the Mountain link below.

Thanks. Not a big hippity-hop head. smile

You know, since they didn't make the final cut in the original Woodstock Soundtrack release, I never heard that performance.
I know it's on the box set but I don't have that yet.
