Lady Gaga: ready for her close-up The New York singing sensation talks fashion, Madonna and letting it all hang out When I ask how it feels to have become an icon overnight, GaGa scoffs at the suggestion. “People use that word so carelessly. I mean, don’t just freakin’ hand it to me on a plate because I dress cool. Make me earn it!” She is to this generation of Millennial New Yorkers what Madonna was in the early 1980s. Madonna in 1982-1983 wasn't an 'icon' yet, but you knew something was happening. Janet in 1986-1987 wasn't an icon yet, but you knew something was happening. I'm NOT labeling her an icon yet since the girl still has to prove it [...and she understands that], but so far, she is definitely what Madonna was in 1982-1983 when she first came out. She represents the current Millennial scene of NYC with folks like The Virgins, Semi Precious Weapons, Amanda Lepore/Cazwell, etc. She's just getting started. I say 1982-1983, because at this point, GaGa is in her "pre-Like A Virgin" phase, if you will. And her "1982-'83"-type era is increasingly feeling shorter and shorter since the internet makes things so viral. If GaGa came out in '82, it would've taken two years to reach the point of fame she's at now with no internet, no YouTube, etc. She would've only been known in big city clubs/radio if this were truly 1983. The Fame plays a lot like Madonna's debut or Janet's Control album. It plays and feels like a party/club record. There's just gobs of songs on there that just hit you. And it depends on WHO you ask in NY, because she's blown up to the point where heads in the clubs who were dancing to "Just Dance" at the underground spots last year when she was under-the-radar, are dismissing her since she hit mainstream [...you know the deal]. She's at a point where people are picking sides and actually have an opinion. She's Pop now. "Just Dance" is her Everybody, imho. I remember in Spring/Summer '08 hearing "Just Dance" freshly played in the New York clubs or just at dive bars with a CD-turntable and shitty speakers. It was like in summer, if you were vibing to GaGa, you got it, some of my best party moments last year were to Just Dance. There wasn't hype yet, it was played because it had a vibe that was On. I really loved dancing to it before anyone knew WHO she was, that was cool. I KNEW it was getting crazier when I went to Atlantic City Labor Day wkend and heard Samantha Ronson DJing the tune with Lindsay Lohan behind her in the DJ booth. Hype is only natural because she's new, but she has the talent and the sheer passion to back it up. It radiates through her. The girl is humble as all hell when you see her live. It's like she's rooting for you while you're rooting for her. And even though she's just another 20something girl, she has something about her that draws you in. The energy I felt when I saw her at her album release concert @ the Highline with she and her fans was kinetic. It was like, you could not escape what was happening.

VoicesCarry said: PanthaGirl said: Nope not a fan she's trying to express new age crap but sounds like she's expressing a watermelon. I find vocalists alike are such victims of pop culture and I really can't see where musical talent fits with pretense, posing, lip syncing and repetitious sampled beats and sequences that is considered marketable. By all means have it and sell it to the masses out there but please don't call it the music industry.
Basically none of it is actually music. If it is then pick up a guitar and write me a tune. And if you can't, then just understand that music is a little harder than standing with a microphone posing and telling everyone how cool they are, not playing a single instrument or miming to a song someone else wrote. Sure, the contemporary music industry may have evolved into what we have now, but it is no longer the music industry. It is too focussed on everything but music to deserve to be called such. And singers who call themselves musicians, that also annoys me - you're a vocalist. I prefer to continue to broaden my musical spectrum away from the mainstream. So, because she's now mainstream (after YEARS of being underground in NYC), ooooh, she's easy to dismiss. With respect to her songs, she has acoustic versions of most of them. So, yeah, pretty easy for her to pick up a guitar (or her preference, piano) and write them. Since she can actually play an instrument, it's not hard for her - that's how her songs are written. Yeah, she's a musician. And, let's see - lip synching? Nope - she sings live. Pretense/posing? I guess David Bowie, Blondie, The Beatles, etc. sucked, too. [Edited 3/17/09 16:09pm] Okay so what do Bowie and Blondie have to do with this? I'm keeping it in the now, the 80's glam rock genre hasn't got anything to do with mainstream media today. Your a fan of gaga so that's good for you and the others but for me she's as shamelessly manufactured and talentless as music gets. She and artists alike are a disgrace to the industry and the fact that this crap can make money and engender so much support is an embarassment to our so called enlightened society. It just proves what mindless puppets the masses are. Always have been, always will be. The music industry seems to be great at proving that point. It's the mass produced music industry and the computer generated tunes with marketing gurus selecting the face and selling the video instead of the music is what does suck. The contemporary music industry is at its worst in history, though not for the fakers and posers, but for real musicians and music itself - the industry has been on the whole taken over by accountants and skill-less individuals who are unqualified to actually be in the music industry. Songs as such afterall do nothing inventive or interesting and have no substance. She has an unflattering image that seems to suggest she takes herself very seriously along with terrible singing, bad lyrics, and the fact her songs are getting trashed over and over on commercial radio. A few chords on the guitar doesn't make one a musician either, I'd like to see her attempt high notes at 130 - 150 bpm with heavily distorted and compressed guitars. In the end the 'your taste is whats important' mentality is best, and I suppose even if there's people out there making loads of money off something absolutely ridiculously bad, good for them. If they can produce a compilation of bullshit and sell it - right on.

Nice dodging there, but what does any of this have to do with the facts? a) She sings live, b) She writes her own stuff, and c) She plays an instrument This alone makes her stand out from pretty much everyone else out there right now. I don't care if she's doing it on guitar, piano or the harmonica & comb. A guitar is now the only instrument of worth? Bowie and Blondie were mentioned because how can you cite image or persona as an argument to detract from musicality if many of the greats were just as much about image and persona as they were about musicianship? Even if you don't like her, I think she does have talent. I know that many artists I dislike have talent, but I certainly won't take that away from them and lump them in along with the Britneys of the world. [Edited 3/17/09 22:41pm]

Ahhh, this clip makes me so want to track down her very, very early material when she was performing on the Lower East Side as The SGBand [The Stefani Germanotta Band] in 2006. She had a old EP that I'm now trying to track down called Words[or Red and Blue] produced by Joe Vulpis. She dons so many hats: the girl can go Bette Midler at the Continental Baths on ya, all she needs to do is make a comedic stick and she'd be a natural for cabarets and Broadway shows, too. The girl could've taken it in any direction. She managed to strike it with pop. This clip also reminds me that Space Cowboy and The Pipettes are now on Cherrytree Records. So she's U.S. labelmates with them, Feist, The Police, LMFAO, Robyn and La Roux. I'm looking forward to their new stuff, too.

Not to mention all the pitch bends she used in her performance autotune would have destroyed that performance had it been used. Part of what's endearing about her live performance here as opposed to what you hear on the record (or anyones record these days), are these imperfections! It's raw, it's real, but in the end the pitch imperfections don't matter, because the talent shines through. Admit it, you were surprised at her vocal chops in the clip and now you're trying to justify your premeditated views? I'll freely admit, I was surprised when I saw that too! That's why I gotta give it up to the young lady. I'll reiterate again, I didn't rate her at all until about a week ago when I heard her singing and playing the piano. Her stuff on the radio never grabbed my attention, because the style of production is just not my thing. Music, sweet music, I wish I could caress and...kiss, kiss...

My last post is not justifying anything prior, it was in response to her so called 'natural talent'. Everything typed still stands there is no point in repeating it over every post. Actually it's been quite amusing discovering the many layers of crap about her as a vocalist to discuss. Therefore I can say I won't admit to anything that I know is not to my liking, would U? She has no worthy substance and her lyrics are weak. I've never been a fan of pop mainstream even though for some it has its functions. For others it makes them so sick of hearing the same thing that they go searching for something new, which is how the independant label bands gather followings. And I will say this, if you want to find good music you have to go beyond the mainstream. Now I'm not saying that all mainstream is absolute bullshit, I'm just saying that behind all the popular mainstream stuff there is alot of amazing flawless talent. The peeps that only listen to mainstream like gaga are really the ones being kinda ignorant because they have not sampled all that music has to offer...

It was actually pretty fun talking about GaGa on the org in the Summer of last year because the topics dropped like submarines or I could vibe to her music without anyone's "opinion." Speaking of which, old post from July '08 :: http://prince.org/msg/8/277586 Yeah I remember that post, but I didnt really get into Just Dance. I heard it in clubs loud and started to like it more because she has a interesting voice..then hated it again when I found out all the gay boys were all over her..then I said, "to hell with it!!" Some orger once said she was a rebirth of Dale Bozzio from that 80s group Missing Persons. I totally see it. She's cute, petite, quirky, punkish, got a crazy wardrobe and giving off the skanky sex appeal dudes and teen girls like so much. While I don't care much for her look (plain jane tryna be sweaty betty) I think her voice is exceptionally strong on Just Dance and the song hasn't worn on me yet...I still dig it after hearing it 101 times. She might however be a one hit wonder if her follow up songs don't do as well. Plus, if Akon is diggin her then she aiight in my book and might last past a sophmore CD.
