I can't stand Xscape!!! They only had one or 2 songs that I half-way liked. They couldn't carry a tune to save their lives.

And they can't spell.

A little tidbit:

Keisha from Total(other girl with short hair) was Andre 3000(Outkast) first real love. After dating her he decided to become celibate..then he met Erykah. He says he's never loved a girl like he loved Keisha though..

Also, Keisha is now married to Omar Epps(Actor).

BTW, Totals style had more of an impact on me with songs like Trippin, Kissing You, Tell Me What You Want(With Mase) and etc.

how can you not like Keith Sweats' "Nobody"?????

Very easily, RB and rock went down the drain in this decade

well IMO RB was the BEST during the 90s , we had groups like Dru Hill, boyz to men, even New edition, 112, blackstreet,TlC, non-groups janet jackson, , brandy, monica, toni braxton, Baby face, John b, KC-Jo Jo, R kelly, Aaliyah, Mya, lauren hill, Deborah Cox

I seriously believe the 90s rnb were AMAZING. The 80s was okay.

All the girls in Total could reasonably sing.

2 of the girls (minus 1) in S.W.V. could sing very well.

Although short 1 girl, I'm going to give it to S.W.V. Total could harmonize, but they sound no better than some the girls that I know that can "clown around" sing.

I seriously believe the 90s rnb were AMAZING. The 80s was okay.

You say this only because it was the decade where "you came to be". For many of us here, it was the 70s and 80s. I was born in the early 70s, and grew up in the 80s. To me, the best decade of r&b definitely was the 70s. You had some of the most influential groups/families that derived in this decade. Many of them are still around today (The Jacksons immediately come to mind).

By the time the 80s came along, r&b was still around and still evolving, but it seems to have started losing some of it's heartfelt meaning and it started being about money (not that it wasn't always about that).

By the time the 90s came around, it was all about the "flavor of the month" club. If a group/singer lasted longer than 3 or 4 years, it was a good sign. It was still about the money, but a lot of the acts seemed to be disposable. Imagine, Total, 112, Soul IV Real, Color Me Badd, SWV, TLC, Bell Biv Devoe, Carl Thomas, Faith Evan, etc. could not seem to remain relevant. I will say that some of these acts had HUGE hits and are still admired, but have since faded away.

A true test of time is how many times you hear a song on an oldies station or how many people still listen and admire your music. I would definitely put SWV in that group, but a group like Total just didn't have the chops to sustain.

Didn't on SWV's 2nd album, all of them had a song where they sang lead?

did any of the rnb acts from the 80s and 70s stay relevant???? Last time i checked NOT MANY. lol

who cares about flavor of the month, if an artist made a great song, you can't take away from that song because they were around for only a few years.

I LOOOOOVE THE 90S. it was actually laid back and fun.

I'm not saying that the music I like is better ( or vice versa). I'm just saying that people tend to like the music of their generation.

For the groups and artists of the 70s, LOTS of them are still relevant today. Sure, they may not still be making music, but their music has stood the test of time. Tell me, how many hits from Dru Hill do you still hear compared to a group like Debarge or Switch?

If you're talking about 90s artists/acts that were big and continue to be revered, there are quite a few, but there are more that didn't make it. SWV, TLC En Vogue and Salt N Pepa were the biggest r&b female acts of the 90s. People still talk about these ladies and jam their music. I don't hear Total get mentioned EVER about being an influence.

When people speak of 90s influences, they usually start referring to producers and writers.

SWV all the way.

I got tired of TOTAL after the first album.

To be honest tho, none of the girl groups that came in the 1990s don't do much for me nowadays as they did then. Only En Vogue keeps my interest. I don't even care about TLC that much (Lisa's death may have something to do with that tho...) and XScape? There was something about that group that used to bother me. lol

Not in my book. The only song I half-way liked was the remake of "Who Can I Run TO". The rest was horrible to me. The worst was "Understanding". They always off pitch. Sure, they tried, but never could quite hit the note. Tiny had the worst voice in the group to me.

I was listening to the remix of "Always Be My Baby" with Mariah and Xscape the other day and I noticed how LOW their vocals were mixed. I think Mariah just used them because they were JD's group at the time.

I heard Carl Thomas' last album and it was utter garbage. He is still singing the same types of songs he started out singing. No growth as an artist at all.

I agree wholeheartedly that the best thing they ever did was the remake of "Who Can I Run To." I love that. I liked some of their other singles ("Just Kickin' It," "Understanding," "Love On My Mind," "Feels So Good"), but I hated others ("Can't Hang," "Run to the Arms...," "Do You Want To," "My Little Secret").

Wow! You really like changing faces over these three? I thought changing
faces first album was wack. They improved on the second album but seemed
lost on the third. R.Kelly pretty much used them. To illustrate how far
they fell off, one of the members of changing faces worked with one of
my cousins at a health care facility. Sparkle knew what was up too.
Different strokes for different folks but imo changing faces were below
the talent level of these three groups. I won't even waste my time talking
about total unless it was for a booty call. lol

Really?? Changing Faces' first album wasn't bad IMO, the second one was cool but their 3rd one was weak. Besides their singles, Jade was weak. Zhane's 1st album was cool, but everything after that was forgettable. The same goes for Brownstone who could outsing just about any 90's female R&B group listed (except SWV, En Vogue & Xscape). They caught the sophomore slump harder than any of the B-class girl groups, because I thought they had the most potential. I remember first hearing that '5 miles to empty' or whatever that song was called, and thinking, "these girls are done". Such a shame.

LOL @ Sparkle. She should of taken her own advice and "be careful".

I'm sorry but Brownstone will sing circles around SWV, IMO. The only group that I can see giving Brownstone some serious competition would be En Vogue, maybe Xscape. And "5 Miles To Empty" is one of my all time-favorite songs by them. To be honest, the only groups I really enjoyed were Brownstone and En Vogue. I lost interest in Jade after their Jade To The Max cassette, Zhane, Xscape and Total only had a couple of songs I liked and I could never get into Changing Faces. I actually thought they were quite boring and actually got tired of TLC after "WaterFalls."
