Alexander O'Neal or Freddie Jackson?

Both are primarily mid 80's to early 90's artists. But who are you rocking with??? The hit-making balladeer, or the uptempo party starter????

Alex, not contest. Next time give him a worthy opponent.
I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

Never heard any of Freddie Jackson's music, although I have heard the name before.

Also I recall him making a cameo appearance on "Family Matters" back in the day.

So, I guess I'd have to choose Big Alex then....he was a BAD muthafucka. lol

Sang his ass off. cool

It is not known why FuNkeNsteiN capitalizes his name as he does, though some speculate sunlight deficiency caused by the most pimpified white guy afro in Nordic history.

Alexander hands down. I never could stand Freddie's stuff with the exception of Have You Ever Loved Somebody. At least I could jam to Alex and believed him when he sang his lyrics.

So much love for Alex here. However, Freddie was far more successful. Alex only really had maybe a year or so of major success with "Hearsay". Freddie had something like 10 #1 songs in the 80s and early 90s. I always preferred Alex, also. I just recently got into Freddie's music. Many have said Alex's dependency issue hampered his success.

We know that, but we are talking about SOLO CAREERS, They both started SOLO CAREERS around 1984-85 and started to fade around 93 or so. That's what this thread is based on. Nothing else.

And damn y'all hating on Freddie hard. I ain't surprised the Minneapolis association is winning though. I mean, "Rock Me Tonight"? "You Are My Lady"? "Jam Tonight"? The only adult contemporary R&B artist seeing Freddie during that time was Luther and maybe one or two more that I can;t think of right now. Alex is cool though, but I don't think he was nicer than Freddie "Do Me Again" Jackson.

I can't believe u aren't familiar with Freddie's work?!

As for voting, I'll take Alex. Only because his first 3 albums are excellent compared to Freddie.

Freddie's albums all sound about the same. BArry Eastmond did some great work with Freddie, but his albums weren't "masterpieces" like Alex's first 3.

Alexander O' Neal, hands down! smile I enjoy "Sunshine," "Criticize" and his duets with Cherrelle more than any of Freddie Jackson's songs.

As far as Alexander O'Neal goes, out of all the Minneapolis artists during that era, he was the worst. I love "Innocent" and "Fake" but that's all I like from him. Most everything else is too damn mellow and midtempo.

However, Alexander O'Neal is 1,000 times better than Freddie Dull Ass Jackson who did not even make one jam and his slow stuff wasn't even sexy slow stuff. It was typical late 80s sounding adult contemporary sounding stuff.

Mystic Merlin had a bad ass jam with "60 Thrills A Minute". However, Freddie gone solo is the total opposite. Kinda like Lionel Richie solo vs. The Commodores.

That's the problem. An R&B artist should never be adult contemporary.

I don't remember any duets with Melba Moore. I just knew Freddie and Melba were(I don't know if they still are) the best of friends.

That's funny you mentioned that because I remember back in the day people use to have the who do you like better battles between Luther Vandross and Freddie Jackson.

Does anyone remember David Peaston who had that song "Two Wrongs Don't Make A Right." I remember thinking he was like a Freddie Jackson clone.

I liked them both, but they were in my view, entirely different artists so I wouldn't compare the two.
Alexander O'neal however is part of some of my favorite 80s cuts.
