I mean, nobody can hold a candle to Marvin but Robert's version came pretty damn close... Hell, I'll say that. I like that one well enough, but I don't think it's anywhere near the original. My favorite remakes involving Palmer are "I Didn't Mean to Turn You On," "Tell Me I'm Not Dreaming," and "Bang a Gong (Get It On)." To each his own then. But, like I said, I think Marvin would have been pleased with Robert's take on his track. It's very soulful and respectful to the original. Still, there are too many moments in the song where his delivery is too stilted to compare it favorably to a vocalist as fluid as Marvin. Also, layered harmonies of Palmer's voice just don't have the same impact as they do with Marvin. I don't fault him -- nobody harmonizes with himself as well as Marvin did. The only remake of Robert's I listen to is "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On", I like what the players did with the music, it still can't touch the Jam+Lewis+Cherelle original though. [Edited 3/12/09 21:25pm]

I like his cover just as much as the original, mostly because he's a better singer than Cherelle and I've always enjoyed the comedic value. "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

I'm a gapper for life. I like Robert Palmer, but nothing compares to the Tulsa boys layin' it down. Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!

See,I totally disagree. The original by Cherelle is superb....arguably Jam and Lewis' best production work of the 80s.I also think this song was meant to be sung by a female. It sounds silly for a man to be singing those lines. We're supposed to be "dogs" We're not supposed to turn down a one-night stand!

I love the production as well. Like I said, I prefer his voice over hers. And while I still find the idea of a man singing it amusing now that I'm older, I've now been in a similar situation... It's OK, but I much prefer The Gap Band's version, mainly cause of Charlie Wilson's vocals.
