Frank Zappa and my 6 year old I have a copy of the Cheap thrills album and it happens to be pink.
This caught my daughter's attention and she now likes to listen to it. The only problem is her favorit song on it is "catholic girls". They joke about BJ's, VD...etc. She hasn't pick up on what they're singing about, but she will sooner or later. I think I'm going to have hide it and tell her it broke!

yipes!
aw, don't sweat it. my mom played zappa around me when i was a kid all the time. i knew some of the dirty stuff he was talking about but i had no idea what most of the naughty humor meant in his music. and when i'd ask my mom, she'd just roll her eyes and say "oh, frank's just being stupid" with a nervous giggle. a lot of things may have warped me for the rest of my life, but i'm pretty sure growing up on zappa music wasn't one of those things.

it's pretty funny. She makes me skip the Bobby Brown song, because they
say "Heiny"? So she doesn't get the first song is so much worse...

Your kid's got good taste. Don't bother with censoring of songs or lyrics, just be prepared to answer any questions if they should come.
I'd rather have a kid listening to lyrical filth in stellar music like Zappa's and with any luck develop decent taste in music because of it, than to hand them squeaky-clean bullshit like Hilary Duff or the Jonas Brothers anyday. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

This funny, because as an adult, sometimes I scratch/shake my head over lyrics on some Zappa tunes. However, the music is so "stellar" that I don't even care. That said, I still turn up "Muffin Man" when I'm in my car and sing along at the top of my lungs!! perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...

so much of zappa's humor is about how stupid certain things sound when you say them. i mean, "titties and beer" is hilarious to me, just because of the way they keep babbling it over and over. if i had a kid, i'd probably get in trouble for little anxy junior chanting "titties and beer, titties and beer..." at recess.

They serve their purpose, crudeness and all. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

That's great.
Maybe you could wean her over to something like... ...Ruben & The Jets An interesting cover and fun but not so questionable lyrics. ...Cheap Thrills ...How Could I Be Such A Fool Unfortunately, Jelly Roll Gum Drop isn't up on YouTube. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

to this day... if i take my shoes off in the company of my Mom she promptly says "Stinkfoot" a-la Zappa...
Love Frank, hate that. I was actually schooled to respect Zappa & pay attention to his lyrics. course, i had Dirty Mind in Kindergarden.. the other kids found out about the music at our house. word was, Jesus didn't love me... Zappa fans get no love in kiddie Christianity...

Rev, I know you remember listening to that craaaaazy-ass Thing Fish album at my house back in the day! My parents gave that cd to me for xmas one year because they knew I was really getting in to Zappa and even though they didn't really care for him. They had NO IDEA what kind of crazy shit was going to be on those discs! I've always been glad that they did because it was one of the first Zappa albums that I owned and it just made me want to get more and more! Yeah man, I say if she likes it, give her Zappa!! .....maybe not Thing Fish though "Hyperactive when I was small, Hyperactive now I'm grown, Hyperactive 'till I'm dead and gone"
