Byrd's 1972-76 run is essential jazz funk but I think his catalog before and after the Mizells shows who was the real talent.

Donald Byrd's Mizell produced albums on Blue Note were pretty much just that - Mizell brothers albums with Donald Byrd playing trumpet. biggrin

But Byrd adapted the Mizell sound quite well, which led to the recording of the amazing album Vibes of Truth by the Washington DC based group The Three Pieces, that Byrd produced.

I'm a record nerd, and this is seriously one of my top favorite albums ever!!! Listen to these tracks, and y'all gonna cream in your pants!

There is something to be said about their collaborations with Donald Byrd compared to other artists though...

I think Donald Byrd's albums are the best during that run.

Although not as popular with the public as the other Mizell projects...

...Music Is My Sanctuary, the album they produced for Gary Bartz is pretty cool (and also rather odd coming from Gary Bartz).

Great album cover also.

I thought of her too, of course, but it is something special with Donald Byrd and the Mizells.

My ABSLOUTE fave Mizell Bros production along with...

This(Music Is My Sanctuary) should be included to Syreeta Wright's discography since she contributed a GREAT deal to the making of the album.

BTW, he recorded the ultimate version of this song(IMHO) in the album...

I can't listen to his version without touched
