CLASSIC PERFORMANCE: Debarge on Motown 25 This is where it all started for them. Amazing. They were the young bucks performing in front of and trying to impress all those greats

I like it (no pun intended) but I'm not familiar with High Energy (they kinda bored me). I did like when Debarge came back out in the end though. El was such a star on the rise...

He was!
My oldest cousin Reena was a monster Debarge fan. She told me the story of watching this with her dad, my Uncle Teddy, who is crazy as a mug. She says as soon as Debarge came out and El started singing, my uncle sat up and said, "When did Motown start signing Puerto Ricans?" Pure ignorance, but that is my uncle. I will say, that based on that appearance, if I didn't know better, I would have thought El was Latino. "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

My Uncle Benny is just pure crazy. I can't repeat half the stuff he says.
But yeah, that was his reaction to Debarge. I never liked Debarge performing with High Inergy. I wonder why they did that-the groups are so disparate. "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

I guess I'm in the minority because I never thought DeBarge were Hispanic. However, I enjoy this performance. Whatever happened to High Energy? Did they ever release any videos or an album because I just remember seeing them on Motown 25 and that was it!
It's clear from this performance that El just had that IT factor that the others didn't have. Sure, they are all talented but El has that stage presence where you're drawn to him. He's magnetic

Not sure whatever happened to High Energy.
To me, El looks Latino, or either creole or just plain mixed. So do James, Bobby and Chico. Either way the Debarges have a very distinct look. I agree that El has magnetism, but I think he only really had it in the context of the group. I think he floundered a bit when he went solo. "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

The name "Debarge" really threw me off too I was first told they were half-black and half-Latino, lol. Especially with names like "El" and "Chico". However they had a FRENCH surname. So I got suspicious. Then I heard they were half-French Canadian and African American so it made sense all of a sudden. And I guess black folks do call each other "Chico" since Diana Ross' brother Wilbert is also nicknamed Chico, lol.

Now him looking mixed I can see, but I never thought he was Hispanic, that's all I'm saying. He floundered a bit in the beginning because he probably didn't have total confidence on his own than he did when he was on stage with his siblings, but if you look at more recent performances of him, El has more confidence. I don't care what anyone says I think El could've had more of a successful musical career if he was promoted better, IMO.

High Inergy released several albums.Their biggest hit song was "You Can't Turn Me Off (In The Middle Of Turnin Me On)" which was a Number One R&B hit in late 1977.

High Inergy never really took off on Motown. They had just one hit, "You Can't Turn Me on In the Middle of Turning Me On" (co-written by songwriting legend and Berry Gordy's big sister Gwen Gordy Fuqua), and had a few disco clubbers. By 1983 they were over in Motown. Shortly after this performance, they got dropped from Motown.

yeah High Inergy were pretty much ignored by Motown, although their 1983 single "He's A Pretender" did get a little attention at R&B radio (LaToya Jackson covered this song a year later, btw).

It appears the DeBarges were at their best when the worked as an unit. Whether that was because they feed or bounced off each other and or maybe a little creative tension brought forth exceptional songs... who knows but them. I agree El albums (particularly Gemini, In The Storm, and Heat,Mind, & Soul) were woefully under promoted. Though, how much his personal struggles circumvented that..again only he and the recorded label knows.

It seems to me High Inergy were supposed to be the Emotions 2.0. Were the Emotions on Motown?
Anyhoo, in the mid-90s, I found a box of my cousin Reena's Debarge memoribilia and I found a mag that had an interview with the Debarge mom-it may have been the late, great Rock and Soul-it was dated from '85 and she talked about meeting her husband, who is white, at a roller skating rink. So it did come out in the h 80s that they were half black and half white. The Debarge surname never threw me off, because I know a lot of black people have French surnames. To me, in singing, sometimes Bobby and El have latino cadence in their voice-I am not putting it right, but that is how it seems to me. El was not promoted well at all and it is sad. He could have been a huge RnB artist. He had the looks and more talent than most. Their dad is not French Canadian. He is from Illinois and is French and Irish. The Debarges did have a Puerto Rican stepdad, who gave Chico his nickname. Chico's real name is Jonathan. It boggles my mind that as popular as Debarge were, they are sadly forgotten now. Didn't work.
I think the Debarges performed after MJ. "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

I think the Debarges performed after MJ. Nah, they performed before The Jackson 5ive. If I remember correctly, they went on after Adam Ant "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

My cousin Reena says that after this performance every girl in her junior high class was in love with El.
I can't get over how skinny he was! Those pants he was wearing made it seem like he had hips [Edited 2/28/09 20:32pm] "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

I wonder what the video set list look like.
Marvin must've appeared either before or after the Jacksons/DeBarge... I know The Supremes came last, lol.

They badly need to do a behind the music story on this, an UNSUNG or something. A book would be nice. I know there was some serious drama going on behind the scenes. I of course would love to know the Debarge angle on the whole thing. "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

I doubt if there was any besides the sisters dating the DeBarge brothers causing conflict since the Jacksons were out of the label when DeBarge arrived and Jermaine was their original producer.
