I wonder what the video set list look like.

Marvin must've appeared either before or after the Jacksons/DeBarge...

I know The Supremes came last, lol.

I need to look at my VHS again

Damn I praise whoever was lucky to record all those! Knowing how I was back then, it'll be hard finding most of that stuff. Only Marvin Live 1976, Mike in Bucharest and the Jacksons' American Dream were the ones played constantly around here, lol.

Yep, both were bootlegs though. American Dream for the first 30 minutes or so, someone's alarm clock was goin' off and the Mike was straight from the HBO broadcast. All the rest were official VHS's. EWF from 81' and Kool and the Gang from 82'. And how could I forget Prince, Purple Rain Tour VHS. I didn't watch it as much as the others, I didn't like Prince too much when I was younger.

I don't see the MJ/El comparisons, not at all. Maybe at the time it was more obvious, but not now. I think it was because Prince and MJ were THE 2 big icons of black American music and El was more similar to MJ.

The only sister dating a Debarge at the time was Janet with James, if they indeed were together then.

I loved it too. Marvin was smooth until the end! cool I smiled on all four corners seeing that. Michael, Marvin, El, Smokey, Diana, Martha, all of them on the stage! touched That last image of Marvin and Berry hugging was emotional, I have to admit.

That's what's missing in black music today: the closeness

I still want to know what other Jackson singer was dating a Debarge. Bobby and Latoya had been over for years by then.

I don't think there was ever any Debarge/Jackson drama. Jermaine was on their Unsung ep and seems to think fondly of the Debarges. I have seen pics of El hanging with Jermaine and Jackie in 2003, so I think the 2 families have always been cool. The only Jackson that I think never really had much to do with the Debarges was MJ.

There was definitely no beef. Those families respect each other.

The beef was media generated. There could only be one top black musical family in the 80s and the Debarges were portrayed as upstarts. The families go way back-Jermaine discovered Switch.

The families were cool although I do remember reports of James talking about Michael in tabloids back in '93 or '94

I think James would have to be cool with Mike since he lived in the house Michael owned lol

At that time, I really doubt MJ was around that much.

Funny how in the finale at the end, El is the only Debarge you see. A harbinger of things to come.

Well you have to remember James was still on that stuff when he went to the tabloids. lol

Slenderoni1978

Y'all going to make me pull out the old VHS tape biggrin

I know one thing when you watch Motown At the Apollo it was a harbinger of things to come when El is the only one dressed in white and silver while the others have on black.

Do any of you guys remember they did a "Motown 26?" Or was it "Motown At The Revue" where it was Vanity and DeBarge, or should I say El, because I don't remember seeing the others performing "Rhythm Of The Night." I just remember El and a stage filled with dancers.

lol Oh, there was drama, lots of drama behind the scenes. As much as I think most of the Motown artist had mutual respect for one another there was a lot of back biting. Such is life, any work environment comes has it's particular issues. I remember watching this when is aired, it was amazing to see all that amazing talent/Legends together again in one room. smile

P.S. I didn't finish my thought. lol You know CBS edited out the Ms. Ross pushing elbowing Ms. Wilson out of the way during that special. So much for closeness.

Alot of legends had problems with Motown and Berry. With The Jacksons, all they had to do was ask....but it was convincing Michael to do it was the problem lol

When was Motown at the Apollo? Could it be as simple as El was in those colors just because that is what the stylist put him in?
