I'm watching the Queen Latifah performance now during the tribute to those who passed this year. I'mlooking forward to watching her voice mature in the jazz genre. She sounds appropriately lovely here. Did anyone see Alica Keyes earlier? She looked extraordinary with the "fall" hairdo; very much like an old school film starlet. I didn't even recognize her when she first appeared onstage.

I think she has the right idea in how to work the Hollywood scene in that, so far, she's stayed away from singing roles. And, I can tell she's worked on her public speaking skills ('cause when she first started out, she was a mess!)
Queen Latifah did a great job, I thought. I said on the other thread that I forgot she could sing...very smooth quality to her voice. "Be glad for what you had baby, what you've got..."

Hate has nothing to do with it. There are those of us, however, who came of age when Hollywood churned out true triple threats. When I'm watching the Oscars, during a segment like the one Jackman and Knowles did I want to see the next Shirley McClaine, the next Liza. While I appreciate Beyonce's talent and success in the pop music realm, watching her destroy Fosse's All That Jazz (I'm not even going to touch the poor execution of choreography), well for me it's akin to enduring nails on a chalkboard and sandpaper on my eyeballs. My standards are pretty high when it comes to musicals, and I simply don't find Knowles the creme de la creme when it comes to knocking an Irving Berlin number out the park. Not more, not less. Beyonce's stage outfit did her no favors. It accentuated her huge ass hips and thighs. I am boggled by the fact that someone who works out as hard as she must, still has thighs like that. Then again, Bill Clinton jogged all the time and he still had big ol legs "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

I think in Alicia's case, she just simply grew up .I remember when she was in her "round the way girl" phase, ha! When you're young it's so easy to be all over the place publicly and still speak as if you're with your friends sitting on the stoop . But the child did after all, make the cut for Columbia University, and it appears that all the humanitarian work she's doing domestically and internationally has really matured her. She's had moments of great poise and serenity in the last few years. I liked her in "The Secret Life of Bees", actually. It'll be interesting to see how she evolves as a mature young woman with her film projects in the next few years. I'm definitely one down for keeping the girls away from these singing roles. if they're going to act, then damn it, ACT

That IS how she used to sound, giving "shout outs" and whatnot. I enjoyed her in "Secret Life of Bees" as well (I liked Hudson too). There were a few scenes where she seemed to be thinking too much, but overall I was impressed. She has good screen presence. I also like how Alicia will give you a chance to miss her. It seems she understands how important it is to maintain a bit of mystery. I was just talking to my aunt about this tonight. She doesn't watch a lot of TV and she said "I wish Beyonce would go sit down somewhere!" If you knew my aunt, you'd know how telling that someone like her is sick of Beyonce. And it aint just some 'haters' lol on the org that thought this segment stunk, I see. Check the links below for choice observations. I did read before hand that decided to go with Anne Hathaway instead of Beyonce and the High School Musical kids. And Zefron said they threw together their performance at the last minute. I didn't know Hathaway could sing, but now I can see why they went with her instead. eonline's best and worst: http://www.eonline.com/ub...mania.html Entertainment Weekly's Pop Watch live blog : http://popwatch.ew.com/po...+live+blog Blogger comments: decadent Sun, Feb 22, 2009 at 09:57 PM EST

That reminds me of the time that Minnie Driver and others got bumped so Beyonce could sing all three songs at the Oscars that one time. Hathway did well for herself.

Posted Feb 23rd 2009 12:32PM by TMZ Staff With just two little words, Beyonce re-ignited the world's biggest cat fight at the Oscars last night -- belting out the same song Etta James threatened to "whip Beyonce's ass" over just a few weeks ago. Completely ignoring the verbal attack and physical threats Etta unleashed when B sang "At Last" at Obama's Inauguration, Knowles busted out the song AGAIN during last night's Oscar telecast -- as the most dramatic moment of an absolutely horrendous musical number. Oh and her gown was from the esteemed, House of Dereon. I didn't mind her back in the day when she had some x-factor going for her, these days I can do without. I didn't like the performance, nor that outfit on her, it would have been flattering on if she lost 20 pounds prior and honestly a true musician need not lip synch!

bettybop said: Oh and her gown was from the esteemed, House of Dereon. Yahoo graded her dress here: http://oscars.movies.yaho...OmgPhoid=7 [Edited 2/23/09 19:57pm] LOL I love what the critics on MSN had to say about her dress: Urn Over a New Leaf: Are you kidding us with this, Beyoncé? It seems you learned nothing from our three-part lecture series on how to avoid putting the "ack!" in tacky, because here you are on the red carpet, wedged into a hideous, hermetically sealed vase masquerading as a black and gold leaf mermaid gown. Not surprisingly, this eyesore is yet another misstep from your mother's House of Deréon fashion collection. Look, Bey, it's time to face up to the fact that, consciously or not, your mom may not have your best style interests at heart (read: She may secretly hate you). Yes, the dress showcases your to-die-for curves, but at what cost? Elegance and mobility have been sacrificed so you can strike your characteristically labored pose in this flared, floral monstrosity, which should be worn only if a) Your alter ego Sasha Fierce is itching to get into a knock-down, drag-out catfight with Krystle and Alexis on a very special episode of "Dynasty" or b) You're about to have your portrait painted on black velvet, perhaps with a pack of dogs playing poker in the background. But don't worry: It's not all bad news. If our sight line remains firmly focused above your décolletage, your accessories-light look and pulled-back hair highlight your silky skin, toned shoulders and comely visage. We just can't look down too suddenly or the juxtaposition from pretty to painfully passé is sure to give us whiplash.
