Marlon Jackson planning slavery theme park

from the telegraph

Marlon Jackson, a former member of the Jackson Five, is involved in plans to build the Badagry Historical Resort Development Project, which would feature a memorial and a museum about slavery.

But some historians have condemned the project, which would include a theme park with a slave ship replica, along with casinos, shops, a golf course and condominiums.

The resort would also house memorabilia from the glory years of the Jackson Five, the classic Motown group known for hits including "ABC" and "I Want You Back".

The development group has said it hopes that the band will help attract African-American tourists keen to trace their roots back to Nigeria.

"This will be an adventurous ride giving you an historical overview of African music. From hologram images, concert footage, a state of the art recording facility, to robotic figures displaying the rhythmic beats from 300 years ago where music began leading up to the biggest African group in the world, The Jackson Five," says literature from the investment group behind the plan, called The Motherland Group (TMG).

But critics have said that the project is exploiting a painful history.

"This plan is morally reprehensible, it's like dancing on the graves of dead people and telling them you're honouring them," C Don Adinuba, a writer and PR consultant, told the BBC.

Visitors would be able to visit a replica slave ship and walk the route their shackled ancestors walked before playing a round of golf or relaxing by a pool.

"The Badagry Historical Resort Development Project of Nigeria in essence can become the newly desired and sought-after vacation destination of the world," the group said.

The group has claimed that the slavery theme will help draw tourists and emphasised that its goal is to make Nigeria a "major world player" in African tourism. Gary Loster, former mayor of the city of Saginaw, Michigan, who is involved in the project, said the group hopes that the project can eventually be turned over to Nigerian owners.

South Africa, the tourism leader on the continent, draws about 6 million visitors each year - about 20 times more than Nigeria.

According to TMG, tourists would spend at least £285 million in the resort's first year.

I heard about this... I don't know what to think about this but I don't think this park will ever come to fruition anyways.

yeah, i hate Marlon, Remember that hate filled, greasy-assed Jermaine thread? well Jermaine is a god compared to Marlon, what an untalented fuck. For some reason, I really dislike MJ's brothers, and really i don't want to, but they fucking deserve it. Time and again, they think up these bullshit money-making ideas which just annoy and never happen.

Tito gets a pass. though. always. He seems normal.

The easiest way is watch the Motown25 performance again and his wackass spins and dancing. Remind yourself how Michael carried those talentless assholes for years and why he couldn't give a fuck no more.

i'd be all for a reunion if it was thru a time machine and it was the J5 that came out, but the Jacksons now? those users and losers. fuck that shit.

but this part:

But some historians have condemned the project, which would include a theme park with a slave ship replica, along with casinos, shops, a golf course and condominiums.

is dumb as hell mad

NOW ya'll see why Michael is kinda distant?

I forgot about Jackie! Tall M'fer! yeah he's ok i think (apart from his album in 1973 WTF!?). Not heard anything untoward in him getting Michael on stage or making money for his benefit. Though i could be wrong. Though he is dodgy in that he screwed Paula Abdul back in the day, while married.

Randy, Marlon and Jermaine it is then that Mike should watch out for.

This is WHY Michael will NEVER reunite with his brothers ever again, one of them (except Jackie and Tito of course) always gotta find a way to make a big fool out of themselves with these "engagements". lol People who think Michael is wacky need to look at dumb (Randy), dumber (Jermaine) and dumbest (Marlon). lol

I just hope this latest crackpot idea is false, if not, this is true 'blaxploitation' and Marlon should be truly ashamed of himself. A Museum with considered evaluation of what happened, fine. A theme park with golf, condo's and the J5? fuck off Marlon you ignorant asshole. mad

Lol, as if Michael hasnt been involved in way over the top projects before either lol The Jacksons have a taste for OTT, flamboyant and gaudy things--its in their DNA! lol So it basically sounds like its a theme park that will feature the slave time period--but overall its showcasing the history of africans/african-americans, from their roots in Africa, to slavery to...achieving the American dream? That's where the Jackson Five exhibits and the golf carts come in I guess lol. And y'all back up off of Marlon, he's good people! mad lol

A museum for the Jackson Five is to be built in Nigeria, American developers have announced, as part of a $3.4bn (£2.4bn) luxury resort including concert halls, golf courses, casinos – and a memorial for Africa's former slave trade.

The Badagry Historical Resort, located near Badagry's former slave port, will include a multimillion pound memorial, slave history theme park, five-star hotel and Jackson Five museum. The project is supported in part by Marlon Jackson, one of Michael Jackson's brothers.

"The Jackson family had been looking for a place to site their memorabilia collection," explained Gary Loster, chief executive of the Motherland Group, to the BBC. "We visited the site of the slave port in Badagry and Marlon turned to me and said: 'Let's put it here, this is right.'"

The development will cater to the country's growing tourism industry, particularly African-American tourists who wish to trace their Nigerian roots. Visitors will be able to explore the site of the former transatlantic slave trade, honour the hundreds of thousands who died in what were horrific human rights abuses, and then head off for a round of golf or a massage, before gawping at animatronic versions of the siblings who sang ABC and I Want You Back.

By promising to attract 1.4 million visitors in the first year, the Motherland Group has pledged to "enhance the quality of life for millions of people across Nigeria", according to promotional materials. They hope to create more than 150,000 jobs by the end of their fifth year.

"It's such an emotional place, and I think we all felt that it was the right place to have the Jackson family memorial," Loster said.

The developers' plans, which include a lifesize replica of a slave ship, holograms of the Jackson Five and robot versions of 18th-century African musicians, are not without their opponents.

"It is not appropriate from a cultural or historical point of view," Nigerian historian Toyin Falola told the BBC. "Moneymaking and historical memory are allies in the extension of capitalism. You cry with one eye and wipe it off with a cold beer, leaving the other eye open for gambling."

But Loster, Jackson and the other developers have dismissed these criticisms. "We know the problems facing us," Loster said. "We have visited Nigeria several times."
