I don't get why people get so bent outta shape about rap lyrics when it's clearly obvious that most of that posturing and nonsense is them being a character. I don't see people giving Francis Ford Coppola or Martin Scorcese the same static. But they're labeled as "geniuses" yet the same isn't said about rappers. Women aren't portrayed too well in MOST of their movies.

I haven't listened to much rap in the better part of a decade, but last I heard, it was the rappers marketing their words as reality. They were the ones saying "we're just telling the truth about the communities we know, what is going on in the hood" etc. Has that changed? Have they started to claim themselves as actors?

"It's not a sound byte, this is a real situation. You have to have compassion for others. Just imagine it being your sister or mom and then think about how we should talk about that."

This coming from a man who has no problem denigrating women in videos, referring to them as bitches and hoes and perpetuating other negative stereotypes.

Am I the only one that wants Jay-Z to shut the fuck up?

Play Acting? That's a contradiction in terms.... lol

Funny, when Don Imus referred to the Black women on Rutgers University basketball team as ""nappy-headed hos" many in black community were outraged. Anybody remember Mr, Imus's said, "What's the big deal, black men... black people call themselves each other these names all the time! Yep, maybe Mr. Imus should've explained he was only "play acting". I was surprised by the outrage; I've heard use call each other much worse in court, in public places, and on TV. I'm not surprised by the hypocrisy of those who would justify your spot on observation, Jay-z is a hypocrite.

If you can't understand the power of words and how (in our very recent history in our country, US) ethnic, racial, religious, and sexual slurs are used to debase, humiliate and justify physically violence upon others.... forget it.

I am a little surprised that Jay came out with such a strongly worded statement like that. I guess I feel it's good that he wants people to take the issue seriously. But I do see how he can be viewed as a hypocrite. I mean, what really is going in that clip? He doesn't look that young in that either. eek And yeah, many rappers justify their content by saying they are just reflecting their surroundings and "keeping it real and street."

What is really sad in the clip is seeing the other so called men
around him just looking on and the guy in the white shirt is
laughing. I guess that is his bodyguard behind him that grabs
his arm,I wonder what would've happened if he didn't, there
was no reason for that behavior either. I hope Beyonce doesn't
have to deal with that out of control behavior. sigh
