Anita Baker was AMAZING Thanks to everyone who recommended I see Anita Baker. She was AMAZING.
From the moment she walked out I knew it was going to be awesome. She opened with Mystery and it was about 5 full minutes of the band playing and her just acknowledging the crowd. Bowing, blowing kisses and gesturing from her heart and head to the audience. She wore a beautiful red dress and the stage was just wide open with the band and three back up singers toward the back, the pianist and sax player were at opposite ends near the front. The rest was just Anita and a mic stand and she tore up song after song each one lasting easily 8 or 9 minutes of just music and adlibs. She only sat down once for No One In the World. Now I usually always miss the concerts that the special guest make appearances at, especially for Prince but there were some guests on this night. For a break she brought out Tyrese. I’m not a fan but he looked very handsome, sounded fine and entertained the crowd with excerpts from Lately and Sweet Lady. He said he hadn't been on stage in years and was very nervous. Later, Anita returned and they did a little impromptu singing bit then he left and she continued her set list. Previously she acknowledged Mary J. Blige in the audience and during the encore she brought her out and they did Angel. It was something pretty special. I’m not a big Mary fan but I must admit she sounded pretty good. They joked about not remembering the words but it was all just wonderful. Mary said if it wasn’t for the Rapture album, there would be no MJB. She just kept thanking Anita and singing that she was her angel. It was all very dramatic and touching as MJB usually is. Tyrese came out once more and Anita thanked them and the two of them said goodnight and left the stage. Then Anita said she was bringing out two more friends. I couldn’t imagine who they were but it turned out to be Nathan East and Greg Phillinganes! I was completely done by then especially since I’m a big fan of Greg’s. They got on guitar and piano and performed at the crowds demanding request Fairytales. Um, they tore it up easily for 10-12 minutes! They had gone overtime but nobody was stopping them. Anita actually walked off the stage and came back out and Greg was still getting down. The whole audience was standing and just jamming along. I was amazed at how she used the entire stage and how gracious she was to the band and audience, touching the hands of everyone in the front and thanking them practically individually. She got me twice with Giving You the Best That I Got and I think on You Bring Me Joy . The music was just sooo beautiful. I had the best time and will never hesitate to see her in concert again. The show was being recorded for either HBO or BET so maybe it will appear on TV some where. [Edited 2/17/09 6:48am] [Edited 2/17/09 6:49am] Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

Man that sounds like a great show! I'm jealous.
I've seen her live five times now and I am never disappointed. Last time I saw here, she did part of Baby accapella. I am glad you had a good time.

Co-sign. LOL! Except, I'd add Mary J. Blige aside, too. I felt the same way for both of them. Especially Tyrese. She said this is a young man who started out in music and is now a big movie star. We were trying to guess who she was talking about and some one said "Will Smith?" When she said Tyrese I was like And of course he had to go out into the audience and some of the women acted a fool. I saw it as a bathroom break and an opportunity to get drinks. I cringed a little for Mary too but that turned out to be better than I expected. I do think at one point Mary's voice cracked and Anita just sang "that's alright, that's alright" and waved her on to keep going. Never seen so many cameras recording at once. THAT SOUNDS LIKE A GOOD SHOW, I'VE BEEN LISTENING TO 'FAIRYTALES' A LOT LATELY, SO I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR A 12MINUTE LIVE VERSION OF THAT SONG, I THINK IT IS A CLASSIC, HANDS DOWN. Lady Cab Driver is one of the greatest songs ever!

I have seen Ms. Baker twice and each time, she put on a great show. What I like about her show was that she made the audience a part of her show. "Love is like peeing in your pants, everyone sees it but only you feel its warmth"

Sound like you had a really great time. I definitely won´t miss her if she ever happens to come over here. "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

I hope she comes back to NYC real soon. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that
