Excellent posts Supernova, Mistermaxx and Davideye.

I got the Thriller album as a Christmas in 1982 by my parents{for they knew how much of a MJ fan I was} along with
Ray Parker Jr.Greatest Hits which had just been released as well. My record player was still holding up but on the way out. I had already bought the "The Girl Is Mine" single, because I wanted some MJ music to hold me over to the release of the album. I thought the song was ok, but kind of disappointed especially since it was the first single off of very anticipated album.

I played the album a pretty frequently but not a lot when I got the album for Christmas. Then my record player messed up on me...around the same time as the turntable on the home stereo system messed up in m family's living room. So I couldn't listen to Thriller or my "1999" 45 rpm single by Prince for a while.

When I first Billie Jean, I knew that it was going to be a hit. That song is a monumental classic. I never get tired of hearing that song. That song dominated airwaves. I mean on pop/top 40 and r&B radio stations, you simply couldn't get away from it. I first saw the video on MV3 which was some show out of England. I didn't have cable at the time, but there were video shows coming on through the weekdays on regular TV. When I first saw the video, I was like WOW!!! I've never seen nothing like that before. The video was an event...I called my friends and my cousins some had already seen it..some had not. Some had seen it the same time, I saw it on the MV3 channel. My uncle gave me a boom box in spring of 1983. So I bought me a copy of Michael Jackson's Thriller album, on cassette along with Prince's 1999 album, with money I made from a weekend job I had the time to put money in my pocket while in school

Then the Beat It video came out and that took the world by storm. Around the summer of 83, after Wanna Be Startin Somethin" made the top 10 and Human Nature was released, I remember listening to Casey Kasem's American Top 40 radio show every week to see how far "Human Nature" would climb the charts. Because if it made the top 10 "Thriller" would be the first album in music history to have 5 top ten singles. Human Nature made it to number #7 on the pop singles chart. Then the "Thriller" video "ahem" mini-movie came and blew my mind. Mike was THE MAN in 1983. His album had been nearly the entire year at number #1 on the album chart. The only album that really challenged Thriller at the top of the album charts was The Police's great album Synchronicity which spent 17 weeks at number #1 upon it's release.

Then it was time for Mike to finally get his accolades in Jan and Feb of 1984. It didn't take a genius to figure out that he was going to take home most of the awards for which he was nominated for. When Mike got those 8 awards at the Grammy Awards that just sold the album even more. People forget a lot of time that Thriller was still in the top 5 for a greater part of 1984 and several of those weeks it was at number #1...The album was relased in Dec of 1982. That was an incredible feat. Then Mike was on the cover of Time magazine.

In closing I think that no one will ever break MJ's record for greatest selling album of all time{worldwide sales}. I don't think I'll see it done in my lifetime at least. It gonna take somebody with HUGE mass appeal. Someone that can appeal to fans from 8 to 80.

Great post,Brother915!! I know we always *TRY* not to dwell so much on the 'Thriller' statistics, but it's hard NOT to.That record's commercial success is unprecendented, and it's overall impact is astonishing.

I used to like "Can't Get Outta The Rain{extended version of You Can't Win" which was the B-side of "The Girl Is Mine" single. Nothing really special about it, just has a nice musical backdrop to it.

Here's a little trivia about the 'Thriller' album...

***Eddie Van Halen plays the guitar solo on "Beat It" but he refused to make a cameo in the video because he didn't really think the song would be a big hit.I kid you not!

***The original version of "Billie Jean" featured a long, haunting intro that was discarded, and Michael was really disappointed.

***The bassline on the song "Thriller" was actually "borrowed" from Rick James' 1981 hit "Give It To Me Baby".

***Quincy originally intended to produce 'Thriller' in early 1982 and it was tentatively scheduled for a summer release. But,he got involved with producing a Donna Summer album instead, and 'Thriller' was delayed.

***But Michael spent that extra time composing songs on his own.He wrote "Billie Jean"(in 1981) and "Beat It" before going into the studio with Quincy.

***Speaking of "Billie Jean",there were two 1984 songs that borrowed its' distinctive sound...The Bar Kay's "Dirty Dancer" and Billy Ocean's "Caribbean Queen (No More Love On The Run)".
"Night Rider" by Midnight Star also had that "Billie Jean" Vibe as well.originally MJ had a 5 Minute Guitar Part for "Billie Jean"&Quincy Jones told Him they had too edit things down.also "PYT(Pretty Young THing"Originally was Composed by Michael in a Slower Version but MJ depending on who tells the story was forced into making it into what it became with James Ingram&Quincy Jones taking Writing Credits.Paul Mccartney Co-Wrote "The Girl is Mine" but didn't take the Co-Credit.

Have any of you guys heard the demo to The Girl Is Mine? It's just MJ singing it alone and it sounds SO much better. Maybe Ebony & Ivory would have been passable if it was solo Stevie.
yes I got a Copy&the Melody Sounds alot clearer&Better overall IMHO.the only thing Him&Paul did that I Enjoyed all the way was "Say,Say,Say"IMHO.

I remember when 'Thriller' first came out.Our local R&B station (KSOL) obtained an advance copy a few days before release, and they spent several days airing five new songs: "Beat It","The Lady In My Life","P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)","Baby Be Mine",and the title track.I thought these new songs were great, but who knew that this album would blow up the way it did?

Alot of people think "The Girl Is Mine" is corny, but I think it's a nice song with a great melody. It's certainly more listenable than "Ebony and Ivory"...lol...in his biography, producer Quincy Jones says that, when people heard this first single, they were like "So,this is ALL you got to offer?" It seems that Quincy,Michael and Epic Records deliberately wanted to release a weaker song as the first single,to save the best for later. It was a wise strategy.

In 1983,'Thriller' was unstoppable. You really couldn't go anywhere without hearing this album.I used to take the bus to school every morning, and my bus driver would play this cassette every single day.Back in 1983,Walkmans were still new and one of my classmates would be playing the cassette every day at school. When 'Billie Jean' was released as the second single, the album really took off. That song STILL sounds fresh to this day! That beat, that memorable bassline, those haunting synth lines,Michael's effective vocal delivery...that one song is simply breathtaking!! I actually heard "Billie Jean" at a nightclub the other night, and people went crazy when it came on.That's the impact of a really great pop song.

And then came the videos.Michael's videos were *EVENTS*.I remember the kids in school would rush home to catch his videos on MTV.The "Billie Jean" video is my favorite. At the time, many MTV videos were very simplistic. In many cases, music videos just showed the artist or band lip-syncing the song in a bare studio.Michael took the whole concept up a few notches. The way the ground lights up with his every move...his awesome dance moves during the second verse...his dramatic encounter with Billie at the end of the song.It was nothing short of incredible.Likewise, the "Beat It" video killed almost everything else that was being shown on MTV at the time.People went crazy when they saw Michael in that cool, red jacket with all the zippers, doing those kickass dance moves. It's almost a sin to call the "Thriller" video a "video" because it is so much more. It's more like a mini-movie.

But back to the music.'Thriller' is a masterpiece from beginning to end. There is no filler on this album. The opening track "Wanna Be Startin Something" is a powerful,take-no-prisoners rave-up that could STILL get a party jumpin'."Beat It" simply rocks."Human Nature" is a gorgeous gem that even Miles Davis played in concert."The Lady In My Life" has become a Quiet Storm staple, and with good reason. It's a sensational ballad with a kickass melody and arrangement. The funky "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)" is irresistible and catchy."Billie Jean" is the album's amazing centerpiece,a pulsing, intoxicating uptempo track that, lyrically, deals with an interesting topic (a paternity suit). It wasn't your average bubblegum pop hit."Baby Be Mine" is a charming R&B track that, like everything else on the album, could have easily been a hit single too."The Girl Is Mine" sounded so good on the radio in the fall of 1982.And despite some silly lyrics, the title track is another winning song, with a cool rap by Vincent Price.

Throughout 1983 and much of 1984,Michaelmania was unlike anything I had ever seen.I used to see people wearing one white glove, and the "Beat It" and "Thriller" jackets were seen everywhere.Young girls would have MJ pins all over their shirts and jackets.Whenever MJ would make a TV appearance (such as the Motown 25th Anniversary,or the various Awards shows),the next day in school, that's ALL people would be talking about.I remember the girls at school complaining that Mike took Brooke Shields with him as his date..."How dare he date her! She's just using him"smile

I really don't think we'll see another album like 'Thriller' in this lifetime. No album by ANY artist will ever sell that many copies,or have the same kind of impact around the world. But I'm "thrilled" to have been around for all of that.
I Agree Completely.MJ:you can take all the Boy Groups,Britney,CHristina,"Titanic",Garth Brooks,2Pac,Will Smith,etc.. you can COmbine whatever has been Huge in the Past Decade&Change&you still don't measure up too Half what "MichaelMania" was all about IMHO.nothing like the Magic then or since IMHO.

Yeah I remember that was one of the first albums I personally went out and bought with my own money.. (not asking for it from my parents)

album still rocks!! all the hits are nice.. but I love "Lady of my life" & "human nature"

I only wish MJ after this didn't try to make "remakes/sequels" to it.. with all the same vibe.. in music, name and just trying to top it.

But still the best of his work

hey did anyone get the re-release of Thriller??? I heard they put new stuff on it? demos or something??? what were the extras/new stuff?

Hopefully one day Michael will release a multi-disc box set that spans his entire career. He can add all the bonus tracks that are still in his vaults.

Btw,what's the story behind Anita Baker's song "Mystery"? Years ago,I heard that this song was originally offered to Michael (for 'Thriller' or 'Bad'?) and he turned it down. So,Anita took it and added it to her 1986 'Rapture' album.

I think I rememeber reading something like there were 100 unreleased songs from the Thriller sessions{that didn't make the final cut, as well as, around 100 for the Bad. Anybody else remember reading this??? That's a lot of songs if that's the case.

That's correct! Quincy has said that, when they recording the 'Thriller' and 'Bad' albums, they went through dozens of songs.I know of at least two outtakes from 'Bad'...one is an anti-crack song that was recorded with Run DMC,and the other is a funk track that was recorded with Roger Troutman of Zapp.

Michael was offered "Mystery"He turned that down&Madonna's "la Isla Bonita" He also turned that down as well.the track with Roger Troutman I Belive is briefly played at the start of "The Way you Make Me Feel" Video.you can hear that Groove.Randy Newman had sent MJ a Song for "Thriller" but MJ didn't use it.MJ did tracks with La&Babyface but they didn't make the cut.believe it or not MJ has a "Christmas Album that He was under order from Sony too deliever but MJ being a JW at the time didn't let it out.back in 1993 MJ did a cut called "I really do care 4 the Kids" that was leaked on the Underground tip.I wouldn't be surprised that now Since He is just setting up shop that stuff really starts too Float openly?

Ok more memories of what I thought back then 20 years ago .. I think i was like in the 5th grade.. about:)smile

* I didn't see billie jean because I believe it was not on mtv.. but my first MJ video was "beat it"... and I loved it..I had it on tape and many other early mtv video and just would watch anything on mj smile

* the music awards.. when MJ swept the grammy's I believe was almost my peak with him!! I had this on tape too at the time and would just eat up all of it.. smile

* motown 25 I think it was on showtime?? right?? paid cable.. well I saw it live taped it and watched the moonwalk atleast 5 times a day.. trying to learn it and thought it was amazing! I actually thought the second moonwalk was better because he was just walking then just clicked into the "moonwalk".. I always think of the heavy black girl with the album in the audience holding it up in the left lower corner of your screen lol why who knows but I do smile

* the thriller video and making of.. wow the making of I watch like a million times and just loved it.. I love makeup and effects.smilesmilesmilesmile

* the pepsi commercial and fire.. now this was my peak with mj.. I believed all this stuff all the stories.. the burning was true but afterwards the whole the kid broke his neck doing the head spin in the commercial rumor..

* I remember the moment where I started to dislike MJ .. it was everything after the pepsi fire.. he had webster on his lap,ect.. then him releasing story after story.

I always like Prince in 5th grade.. the 1999 album I do remember dancing to it at my girlfriends birthday party and when we heard "erotic city" I was floored by the swear words!!! I loved it..smilesmile wink

BUT I was still more a MJ fan then.. UNTIL Prince was at the American Music Awards and swept most of the awards! and had the funny great 1 word speech " Thanks"!!! lol that was amazing and seeing all the fans scream for him when they just showed his face !! also the bodyguard coming up with him smile funny stuff!!

after these next bunch of award shows I was a Prince fan.. and started to drift from MJ

because MJ got more into releasing stories in the Tabs and everywhere..

~ But at the sametime Prince was releasing Movies, and getting Oscars.. from 1982 - 1987 Prince released 3 single albums,1 double album.. plus wrote hits for other artists, groups and his own bands on his label..

at the sametime MJ was still trying to write his first full album on his own BAD.

** I will never forget Me,my friend & my brother were at the mall.. and we saw the new cardboard cut out for MJ and his new album Bad! and WE WERE IN SHOCK by his face (then!) we all just laughed at it and just couldn't walk away from it for 3 minutes.. just in shock at what he did to his skin to his hair.. to his features.. his clothes???

I really think that pepsi commerical fire is the key to his downfall.. not just with me.. but MJ seeing the huge press he got for the fire (which was true).. he has tried to capture this over and over (but it is fake and comes off fake) also having ONLY "YES Men" around you not telling NO at anything.. when you started to change your face and skin.. a true friend could have told you NO (even on larry king David Gest in 2002 said "he listen to the wrong people,ect,ect..")

so pain killers from the fire in 1984.. and only having yes men around and you releasing stories on Oxygen Chambers, Elephant Bones.. then changing your face (those are the key WRONG moves and where he went wrong.. which made him look "wacko" in the press and public's eyes)

Yeah it is 20 years since probably the TOP album EVER or in the top 3 ever.. BUT yes I can give him love for ALL the stuff he did from the J5 years.. to his Off the Wall early solo stuff & the amazing amazing Thriller album .. UP to when he burned his head..

the first major appearance after was Webster on his Lap at an award show..( I can pretend there is a only a MJ from "the fire" and younger... EVERYTHING after I ignore) his thoughts, music, everything after "The Pepsi Fire"

He is a joke because of all the painkillers,ect..

BUT no one can take away The J5 - Thriller Era wink

Just for the record, he went to the American Music Awards in 1984 with Emmanuel Lewis (i.e. Webster), That was BEFORE the Grammy awards.

I also remembr reading that there were many many songs in the vaults from the Dangeroussessions.
MJ reportedly cut around 70 songs for the Dangerous project. Work started as early as 1989 and Kenneth 'Babyface' Edmonds was recruited to co-produce the record. However, his songs were rejected in favour of the New Jack Swing style pioneered by Teddy Riley.

I've often wondered if the tepid 'You Are My Life' from the Invincible record was included just to appease Babyface.

I love You Are My Life. It's beautiful.
Listen to those backing vocals - they're gorgeous.

who gives a shit...

dont be disrespectful to Thriller..it saved the industry ya know.

I'm not sure it saved the record industry, but it definitly changed it, and i think MJ is highly responsible for the crap (Titney, NStink,...) we got today.
I didn't say Thriller was crap though, don't get me wrong, but it was a new way to promote music and now we got all this shit & it's getting worst all the time.
I wonder how would sound contemporary "pop" music, if MJ didn't release Thriller ??
