El Debarge, Al B Sure, Barry White and James Ingram performing "The Secret Garden"

Never liked this song and not sure how Al B Sure got on this track with legitimate singers, but I love James and El.

You never liked this song? This was my song back in 7th grade! I remember several years ago someone in a DeBarge Fan Club mentioned how Barry White said in his autobiography how El tried to steal the spotlight. I don't know how true that was, though.

It's a shame how these award shows aren't like this anymore sad I remember when I was in school you had to watch The Soul Train Awards or the American Music Awards. Now, it's like "Oh the AMA's are on! Let me turn to something else."

Watching the AMAs is like watching paint dry. Yeah, I heard that story about El trying to steal the show as well. I think it was on Arsenio that this went down. I know El, James, Al and Barry performed the song on there.

I'm sorry but everytime I see all of them on stage together
I think of singing this song, just replace the 'bowls'
with the singers and you will get it. wink

I'm sorry Barry. I enjoyed your voice. cool

It appeared that Barry White was trying to over power EL near the end
It seems as if he had some issues with EL maybe jealous over the
crowd's reaction toward EL.

Now if you want to really want to see someone trying to steal the show
then check this performance with AL, Jon B and others performing
Secret Garden. Jon is funny and AL B Sure
cannot sing live anymore it seems

RosesAreRed, I felt the same way. I couldn't help but crack up when near the end Barry is like, "I SWEAR, SWEAR, SWEAR!" biggrin all loud and whatnot before he's like, "I'll show you right!" He just came out of the blue with it. And when I look at the performance I don't see El trying to steal Barry's thunder. It looks like he's kind of peeved at the reaction El was getting when he's like, "Here in the gar-deeeeen. Whooooo!"

I never thought Al B. Sure could sing. And is it me, or is Al B. Sure clearly lip synching during this performance? He sounds too much like the record. Does anyone else agree?

I was trying to figure out if I ever watched him perform live.It
seems he is lip syncing most of the time even the performance
with Barry White. The video I posted with Jon B all AL
was doing was a lot of talking and telling
Jon or his son to sing.
I think someone finally told himm the truth or he just wanted
to share the love. Hey give him a break. razz He didn't do a Barry.

WOW!. This the first time I've heard ANYONE say they never liked this song. I remember this video like yesterday though. my mom tapes it. What always killed killed about this performance was that muthafuka Barry was sweating pounds before the beat dropped. LOL.

And it's pretty obvious Al B Sure could NEVER sing. Dude had his fame when he dropped his classic In Effect Mode, but when he did that performance Oprah it was a wrap. Remember that??. lol Oh, and dude is definitely lip-syncing this performance. The rest of them are singing live for sure and doing a good job.

Classic.

According to a PA who worked on this awards show and posted their comments on youtube, no one was lip syncing.

I read that same comment. Either way I think he is the weakest vocally out of the four. My favorites are El and James. Barry is cool too.

I don't know how the hell Al B ended up on that track. Maybe Quincy took pity on him.

Quincy discovered Al, so that's how he got on. Q said he wanted a mixture of generations as well. That's why there's Al - The young upstart; James - The older gentleman; El - The young heartthrob; Barry - The father figure.

They should do a remake:

Bilal, Anthony Hamilton, Rahsaan, Maxwell. Tight. cool

Al's part was originally intended for MJ, but issues with Sony and him working on Dangerous prevented him to lay the vocals

I am wondering if El was a lock on this track before of after MJ was considered, because they both have that same type of high pitched voice. I can't imagine Q having 2 singers on a track like that with the same type of vocals

I was wondering that myself. However, I would love to hear El and Michael on the same song.
