Hey, I can make a list of very talented, mediocre, or no talent celebrities, but some people were destined for success in the music business, whether we agree or not. That's life. Anyways, happy birthday and rip Aaliyah. rose

You've heard of them because they were mainstream and successful - nothing more, nothing less. You are confusing popularity and prominence with artistic value and they are mutually exclusive. Please tell me where anyone claimed Aaliyah "shook society with her personality or her music"? This is an appreciation thread for the person and music that touched our lives in one way or another.

Also I disagree, John Lennon had not the time to mature. He was only 40!!

Compared to Aaliyah, who was in her early 20's at the time of her death, he had all the time in the world. That's my point.

so if i've heard of the others because they are mainstream and successul, do you think Aliyha was totally underground and a flop? I think she wanted to be in the same league but from what she did she rightly doesn't deserve being there.
There were people who made better music at 21. Paul McCartney has written Yesterday, George Michael Careless Whisper, Go Go and others, Michael Jackson Don't Stop and let's not talk about Stevie!

And the problem I have with Aaliyah fans is, that they PRETEND as if she was something fantastic, but she was not. I always wondered why she has such a huge following.

I'd like to know how you reached that conclusion, especially considering your admittance to knowing next to nothing of her music. Surely, you know next to nothing about her life as well.

In your opinion. Just like in your opinion, Madonna deserves all the success she enjoyed, but a lot of others on this board would vehemently disagree with you. Aaliyah was far from an underground artist, and her work didn't flop. Even if it had, commercial success has nothing to do with artistic merit.

There were people who made better music at 21. Paul McCartney has written Yesterday, George Michael Careless Whisper, Go Go and others, Michael Jackson Don't Stop and let's not talk about Stevie!

What does this have to do with anything? I mean, really. Are we only allowed to remember or miss an artist if they measure up to some ridiculous standard set by you?

And the problem I have with Aaliyah fans is, that they PRETEND as if she was something fantastic, but she was not.

Aaliyah fans do not have a problem. To them, she was fantastic. You simply do not share that opinion. What's your problem? hammer

I always wondered why she has such a huge following.

It's a big Nazi feminist conspira- oh, wait! Maybe it's because a lot of people like her music? Yeah, that could be it.

I loved her music and she was a great role model, especially in Detroit. She was a class act all the way and has left a huge void in music that has not been filled.

One in a Million is my favorite album of hers, and her eponymous is right there after it.

I wasn't a fan of her first album but she caught my attention
with her second and third album. She was a star on the rise
particularly in acting. Gone but not forgotten. R.I.P aaliyah
You will always be missed.

Damn, has it really been almost 8 years since she passed?! Wow, anyway I always thought she was cool ever since I saw the video for "Back & Forth". "One In A Million" will always be my fave album of hers, but I also thought "Aaliyah" was a great album too and showed great maturity on her part. "I Care 4 U" is one of the best things she ever recorded. She was definitely going places and had a lot of potential which is why I think many people are still so sad about her death, but she still managed to accomplish a lot in her short life and career. Gone, but never forgotten.

RIP

Me too lol

Aaliyah had this presence that so many of these singers these days WISHED they had

she had a beautiful voice, if you saw her Star Search performance when she was little girl or her rendition of At Your Best, it was pretty obvious

nod Co-sign. That's why it kills me when people say she couldn't sing. Anybody who can listen to that and still say she can't sing doesn't know what singing is!
