I don't know how I remembered to wake up at a certain time, maybe it was because I only slept one hour and stayed awake for the other two. I hear ya! I could've put the shows on my DVR and sometimes I did but I like watching them as they were on. I'd be in my bed till 11 thanks to staying up that late but it was well worth it. I recorded 48 episodes onto DVDs. I originally recorded more but I threw two or three of them away because they were late 80s episodes and sorry. Andy is a four letter word.

vainandy said: But you still stayed up because they were worth it. That's the point I was making earlier that the downfall of "Soul Train" didn't come from it's time slot. It's been on WGN cable for decades during the daytime on Saturdays but if you didn't have cable, in lots of local cities, it has always aired late and night and has been successful even before there was such a thing as cable. "Soul Train"s downfall was because there is no such thing as dance oriented music anymore and it was a dance oriented show. And like I said earlier, look how long they played the old episodes recently and people still stayed up to watch it but they had stopped watching it when they were airing new episodes. It's because new music ain't shit. You're not saying anything but the truth. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Yeah, these are new faces and yeah, some of them have good voices, but look at the type of shit they record once they get that record deal after their exposure on the show. They continue on with SOS.....same ole shit. So true. Idol is one of those shows that is bent on finding a "pop" idol. I find it interesting that most of the people that have gotten big from the show either didn't win or turned out to be country singers. Sure, Kelly Clarkson won, but her last album flopped harder than ever. What I am thinking about is a show that focuses on r&b and dance music (like ST and Solid Gold did). Because a country singer would have to compete with other artists that have a full band behind them and the focus isn't only on how good someone can sing. A country artist would have to compete with others that have melodies and the actual sound of the music behind them because as dull as I find country, it is still actual music and R&B isn't anymore. It's easy to give an R&B singer a record deal and throw some shit hop sounding drum machines behind them and have a hit because the R&B world doesn't give a damn about actual music anymore. I like the music on the shows until around early 1985 (pre-Shitney Houston). But as far as the dancing goes, the best dancing on the show ended around late 1981/early 1982. After that, they started getting dancers, especially ladies, that danced stiff like white girls, or were too busy trying to pose and model than dance. Before that, the dancing was unmistakably "black". Andy is a four letter word.

I would never watch a "new" episode of these shows.Three years ago,I was flipping through the channels and came across a new episode of 'Soul Train'.The musical guest was The Pussycat Dolls. It just felt so.....wrong.I grew up in the 70s when 'Soul Train' was so important and so entertaining. If it existed today,it would just become a sad show dedicated to shit hop.

Before that, the dancing was unmistakably "black". Don Cornelius sold out after 1982-83. He sure did. There was a nightly radio show back then called "Radioscope" that had mentioned this. They said that Don had started slipping in more pop/rock songs and brought in a few more white dancers in an attempt to gain a few white viewers and maybe compete with "American Bandstand". I'm sure you noticed from watching some of the old episodes last year, that they played the music video by Dire Straits "Money For Nothing" on one episode and the music video by Huey Lewis and The News "Heart Of Rock And Roll". These songs were never played on R&B radio and were totally out of place on "Soul Train". And the white dancers he brought in were horrible. They danced absolutely stiff as a board and their stiffness seemed to be carrying over to a lot of the black ladies. And the white dancers' partners were white also which looked totally un-natural and out of place. I mean, how often do you see a white couple in an all black club. Most white people that I've seen in all black clubs are dating someone black unless they are one of those white couples who are yuppies who are in there to "explore another culture". Now, Miss Asian Lady, Cheryl Song, looked totally in place. She was on there when she was the only non-black person in there, appeared to be totally at ease, and appeared to be liked and accepted by the black dancers. She seemed to be in there because she wanted to be there because she loved the music rather than just being in there for the sake of being a token. She reminded me so much of myself. . . . I used to be flipping through the channels and see glipses of it and I could actually feel the vomit coming up to my throat. I didn't even call it "Soul Train", I referred to it as the "Shit Hop Train" and wanted it to either go off the air or change it's name because it was destroying the reputation and good name of the show. There's a radio station in my area that's the same way. This radio station was the baddest station in Jackson when I was growing up, and back in the day, if my knob had fallen off the radio, I wouldn't have cared as long as the station was on WJMI. Well, it's the only station from back in the day that still exists and plays current R&B. Another one exists but they have a soft soul and oldies format. Whenever I flip through the stations and hear a snip of WJMI, it turns my stomach. They could at least change their name or something. Andy is a four letter word.
