I obviously like the 90s better than the 80s. And the 2000s....well.

That's an album inspired by her "Breathless" character in the movie 'Dick Tracy'.Many of the songs sound like show tunes from the 40s,with "Vogue" being the only real modern-sounding track.I don't think you will like it.You can get "Vogue" on 'The Immaculate Collection'.

01. Bedtime Stories - I think it's the only album of hers I can listen to all the way through without skipping. Fave track: Survival.

02. Like A Prayer - Madonna stealing Prince's sex/Jesus shtick and making it her own. It really does sound like an astoundingly good Prince protogee album. Fave track: Till Death Do Us Part.

03. Ray Of Light - There's an eerie clarity to her voice throughout this album which just wasn't there on the earlier albums. Her voice is mixed really low on all her 80s stuff - probably because she couldn't sing too well until she had proper voice coaching for Evita. Fave track: Ray Of Light.

04. Music - Insane lyrics. Insane production. Lots of guitar. Her most left-field album in my opinion. I know that American Life is even odder in some respects, but it felt like a rehash of the Music album, rather than a progression. This was a curveball when it was released. Fave track: Gone.

05. Confessions On A Dancefloor - Well, it's basically a Kylie Minogue album, isn't it? I could live without at least three of the songs, but when it's good, it's brilliant! Fave track: Sorry.

The funny thing is about "I'm Breathless" is that I think only recently (with the release of "Hard Candy")i twas knocked down to being just a soundtrack even though "Dick Tracy" already has two soundtracks (one of pop music but not the Madonna songs and one of composed music). I wouldn't recommend it for someone just getting into Madonna although I like the version of "Vogue" on there better than the IAC one (although the differences aren't dramatic).

That's just cheating!

I think if you took the last two songs off "True Blue", it would be likely be my number 5....if you put the "Who's The Girl" songs and/or"Spotlight", it's number 3 and her best light pop album ever!

... which is kind of weird, because i'm more enthralled with the pre-Erotica singles than I am with the ones that have come since.

i guess it's indicative of her becoming more of an album artist at that point than a singles artist.

In no particular order:

Like A Prayer - her best album of the 80s, unlike the previous ones, the album tracks are on the level with the singles.

Ray Of Light - the opening 3 songs already puts it among her best, maybe a little too long and I'd cut "Little Star", but great production and amazing vocals.

American Life - to me this one works the best as an album, it has a great flow, the antithesis of the Music album in that regard.

Confessions On A Dance Floor - I used to love this one back in the day more than I do now, it's a bit too repetitive but it still has "Hung Up, "Future Lovers", "Forbidden Love", "Jump", "Push" & "Like It Or Not" that are among my favourites.

Hard Candy - while her latest is usually among my most played, I think to me Hard Candy will stand the test of time, unlike Confessions it's more varied, the 2 different producers made a great competition, the lyrics improved from the previous one and the tracks have so many different sections, my favourite aspect of the album. The tour really helped me to appreciate my lesser loved tracks as well. And of course "Devil Wouldn't Recognize You" is one of my favourite Madonna songs ever!
