Beyonce Rings up New No. 1 Single

NEW YORK (Billboard) – Beyonce notched her fifth solo No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart on Thursday, one more than she scored as a member of Destiny's Child.

"Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)," a track from the R&B star's new solo album "I Am... Sasha Fierce," rose one place to the top, swapping places with T.I.'s "Live You Life."

Another Beyonce song, "If I Were a Boy," held at No. 3, and another former T.I. chart-topper, "Whatever You Like," held at No. 4. Newcomer Lady GaGa's "Just Dance" featuring Colby O'Donis rose two places to No. 5.

Katy Perry's "Hot N Cold" slipped one place to No. 6, Ne-Yo's "Miss Independent" jumped two places to No. 7, Pink's "So What" was steady at No. 8, Britney Spears' "Womanizer" rose three places to No. 9, and Jason Mraz's "I'm Yours" was up three to No. 10.

Top debut honors went to Kanye West's "See You in My Nightmares" featuring Lil Wayne, which started at No. 21. The song comes from West's new album, "808s & Heartbreak," which opened at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 on Wednesday.

AC/DC's "Rock'N'Roll Train" led Billboard's airplay-based Mainstream Rock chart for a third week, and the Offspring's "You're Gonna Go Far, Kid" ruled Modern Rock for an eleventh.

That includes Black Friday? Than that is pretty bad. There was a headline about the numbers for Kayne and GNR being dismal. I would have to agree for GNR considering the hype, I figured it would debut at least at 2 and sell closer to half a million, and then sink like a stone. Kayne with a half a million and a very different sound....is it really that bad? I guess you can't pull the sales are down thing if the last album last year sold about a million....

Is it only the recession or just a sign of the time of the music industry period?

In more important news, Michael Jackson's Number Ones climbs 37-25* on the Billboard Pop Catalog chart selling around 9-10k this week.

That puts the album in the Top 100 on the Billboard 200 Comprehensive Album chart.

The Jacksons Live! also debuts on the R&B Catalog Chart @ #14 thanks to the $4.99 sale price @ Circuit City on Black Friday.

Nice to see MJ can still shift a healthy amount of CD's in this bleak economy.

As for Prince, there's no chart news to report other than the fact he has the #8 Worst Selling #1 album in the Soundscan era. Not an accomplishment to be proud of but not too surprising since his CD's don't sell much these days anyway.

I think considrering Axl hasn't done shit in 15 years and has done nothing to support or promote this album, number 3 on billboard is pretty damn good. just imagine if he would get out there and really push it. i figured either kanye would be number 1 or axl. was rouing more for axl but i ove me some kamye so i'm happy.

by the way, can someone explain those numbers on the billboard 200? i don't undertand which are the actual record sales numbers. what are all those extra numbers for?? sorry i'm lost.

Its both the recession and the times. I just think everyone needs to change the mindset of "selling", everyone is way to rehearsed in the soundscan number lingo and a late 90's early 00's way of thinking but, just like you cant compare an artist from today to an artist from another era, you cant compare sales, i think everyone in 09 and going forward needs to get used to things not selling out the box, be happy when your artist can pull a debut and sell a few hundred thousand, but also look at the overall picture. The reason i say this is something that happend a few years ago with a Hall and Oates album "do it for love" this album on their own label went gold, sold over 500,000, but it was on the chart about 6 weeks and never got past 75, but everyone paid attention to the first 2-3 weeks and now, you really have to look beyond, and be realistic about everything

Another thing that people FAIL to point out, that besides the recession and the internet, bigger than all of this, is the fact that in the last 3 years over you have lost close to 70% of music retail stores, you lost Tower,SamGoody, parts of FYE and you are now losing Virgin in the next 6months, and Best Buy has cut its music stock 40% in stores and what they buy to sell to customers, and Circuit City is a joke too. So all of that together, translate into a major fall in numbers. Just to say that if stores close people will buy online is, sorry to say, but ignornant to issues. Alot of these consumers are just not buying from anyone now, they arent going online, and alot of the ones that do, arent buying the music, they are dowloading for nothing. So the #1 cause is the elimanation of retail stores first and foremost

What's the point of this post? Don't MJ fans have anything better to do than obsess over the sales of OTW/Thriller/current compilation? Nobody disputes the catalog presence of MJ, but that doesn't make him any more relevant than Pink Floyd for example, whose Dark Side Of The Moon still keeps selling.

What will you rant about when the CD goes out of fashion? That Thriller charts on the Hot Digital Songs every year because of Halloween? lol

I wish I lived in New York cause I would love to go to a Virgin Mega Store....there is nothing like that left anymore (Media Play was a store I had I would love and hate but now just REALLY MISS now that it's gone). I just discovered that Tower has a really great online store....I mean, some of the their sales on rarer stuff is SHOCKING, but that does not make a dent in sales.

Well very soon they will both be closed, in Feb 09 the one location on 14th street will begin closure and later in 09 the "flagship" store, the midtown manhattan store will close due to loss of lease for the property. For NYC it was all about Tower Records on 4th in the village, that was the best store ever, they supported local acts, they got the best imports, but once they closed alot of business in that area suffered, that area now is dead and lifeless.

They didnt lose the lease as such. Their leasing rates r so cheap that a company agreed to buy them out so they could liquidate them and lease it out at full market rate.

Barry Manilow is always doing projects like this....remaking old songs from a specific period lol I have a CD that he recorded in the 90s,where he's singing other artists' songs from the 70s.Oddly,it'called 'The Summer of '78' but some of the songs aren't even from that year.

That version of "Never Gonna Give You Up" is a massacre. If you hate the original, you'll appreciate after this. If you liked the original, you'll hate this. If you loved the original, don't listen to this EVER! The slight rearrangements of some of the phrasing is SO bad!

I feel sorry for you.
