I've had a number of different iPods over the years because I upgraded frequently for more space. However, after getting the (8-GB) iPhone a year ago, I've been largely content. I'm going to hold out until a 32-GB (or even 64-GB) iPhone comes along.

I've dropped my hard-drive iPods many times over the years without any problems. Anyway, you can get an arm-band case, a belt case, or just put it in your pocket.

It's nowhere near as bad as I thought it'd be. I have a series of playlists that I use. I just had to let go of the need to have everything available at all times. My absolute favorites are always on there, then I have a "Now Playing" playlist where I dump new albums/songs and a "Daily Genius" playlist where I do a genius playlist of a song I pick for that day. I have an iPhone playlist folder, which makes it easy to organize the playlists in iTunes. It doesn't take long at all to swap things out.

That being said, I would love more capacity. nod

I wouldn't count on Apple doing anything further with the iPod Classics. I have a 120 that I adore, I got it right after they killed the 160's, the bastards.

They're too busy pushing the iPod Touch, which I want but the capacity is too damn small for the money and I hear all the really cool applications and stuff, you have to buy from iTunes to really enjoy it, so it costs even more.

Thanks but my iPod Classic and I are just fine together. cool

Okay. So if you have been following this thread, I have a 60GB Ipod that I have had for about 2 years now. It consists of all types of music but nothing really that new...There is only one podcast and no movies. In all, it has taken up about 27GBs. I don't really download like I used to, only if I hear a particular track, then I will go looking for it. I listen to my pod going to and from work, an hour each day. I would love to get the 32GB touch, do you think that it is worth the sacrafice? Remember, I only listen to it going to and from work.

Cinnie, always loving that avvie.

Not sure if this helps, but the only iPod I ever owned was a 160GB Classic back in '06. It lasted a week before it died on me. I filled the 160 to capacity over a 3-day period and from the first time I played the shit, I could hear the machinery inside making all sorts of bitchy noises. And the thing would heat up REAL hot after a few minutes.

I ended up returning it after a week because I wanted more cash for my annual Coachella trip. At the time, I had two co-workers who had 160s. One of theirs died within a month (he filled it to the brim as well) and the other skipped like an SOB (hers wasn't full yet). The three of us obviously got duds, but it was still a bit of a strange coincidence. Who knows. To this day, I haven't settled on an mp3 player.

I'm wondering if they discontinued the 160 for the reasons above. I've not known anyone who enjoyed one more than about a month. lol That said, someone really needs to cater to those of us who don't want to swap our tunes in and out every week or two. evil And fuck yeah, I need my Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em on there, as well as my After 7. Game recognize game.

Yeah, it's insulting. They're trying to manipulate people into buying the Touch by making the Classic seem antiquated. I asked an Apple Cust. Serv Rep about a plug in or something to make the Classic read PDF files. Her response was, "The Touch does that and so much more, you should consider upgrading."

Give up my 120 Classic for a Touch that at the time of that discussion had a max of 8GB? Yeah right! whofarted

Cnet is the best tech rating site

1. Interface
2. Works with iTunes and the iTunes Store
3. AAC support
4. Number of available peripherals
5. iPod Touch applications and games

Do I need to go on? Also, I don't care what CNet thinks (but they give the iPod the same "Excellent" rating FWIW).

interface? not really
itunes and itunes store? it works with everything else
AAC support? it supports way more formats and maybe even AAC with firmware upgrade
sandisk has a higher number although they might both be excellent

advantages of sandisk
-----
digital fm tunner
voice recorder ( u can even record the radio)
micro SD slot
longer battery life
battery can be replaced by user
the list is endless..

Absolutely. And it's entirely possible that this latest Classic (120GB) is the final one and that they'll slowly fade them out once some solid-state memory solution reaches 128GB at around the same unit price.

But I would argue that we're not quite there yet, as the largest flash-based system is still only at 32GB, leaving a very large portion of the market unfulfilled.

And we're talking mostly about music. If people use these for movies, 120GB and 240GB fill up really fast -- you don't need to be some crazy that has 3,000 albums. wink

So I'd bet on at least one more upgrade of the Classic. But only Apple knows. And even they are probably undecided at this point, needing many more weeks tracking innumerable factors before they make any such decision.

It'll be so much easier once these non-hard drive based technologies take over. But there will still be that 1 in 1,000 persons that want there whole collection of movies in their shirt pocket just in case the mood strikes. And they'll need 4TB (4 trillion bytes).

It never ends. No matter how big the closet is, people will find a way to fill it. wink

On the topic LD brought up about quality decreasing on the larger size drives, this has not been the case based on my experience.

I have the 40 gig, and the 160 gig, and I have no issue with decrease in quality, I use in ear monitors on both.

The improvements for me have been in replacing favorite cd's ripped intially 4 yrs ago at 192 aac with lossless.

If you bypass the headphone jack and come out the bottom port sound quality gets even better.

One other point that I didn't make very gracefully is that if you buy a computer in 18 months or 2 years, you will likely see twice the capacity and performance of right now for the exact same money (all other factors of course being equal). There is a science behind this that has been true since 1958.

So if Apple goes with the Classic for 3 or 4 years at 120GB, they are in fact increasing their profit margin for these units considerably as time moves forward, unless they drop the price mostly commensurate with the price of these 120GB drives that will be falling greatly over this period.

That is why I think that they drop in a larger capacity hard drive, as the price will eventually be the same per unit (or even less), so if they want to keep the same basic price point for this model, they will likely make just as much money with larger capacities.

That's the beauty of electronics. They keep doubling for the same money, despite their innumerable faults.

Of course they could also just keep dropping the price until they drop the Classic altogether.

One can never be entirely sure.

And in the meantime, some other company may come out and blow Apple away.

I think the iPod Classic's days are numbered. I can easily see it being around over the next year or so, maybe with a minor upgrade or two but nothing huge and probably nothing near 240GB unless it continues to sell incredibly well.

However, the iPod touch is really where it's at. If you ONLY want it for music then the "Classic" may be fine but the touch models have a lot more going for them.

The Classic models are running a dead end proprietary software while the touch actually runs a slimmed down version of Mac OS X. The ability to install additional apps for various uses is great. biggrin

I just purchased a refurbished 32GB touch, and I love it. I really don't miss my 60GB due to the fact that I only listen to it going to and from work, and hour each day.

This reminds me that I need to get a new ipod. I just have bad luck with these things. I have gone through five ipods in total, four of which were given to me as gifts and each was 160GB I think so they weren't cheap either. My ipods always end up freezing for some reason (okay the first three times were my fault but the other times I don't know what happened) even when I try to be as careful with them as possible. I have an Mp3 player now, but I need my video ipod back. I miss watching music videos and TV shows, plus the ipod holds so many more songs and I need at least 1000 songs on my music player.
