The largest was the iPod Classic 160GB, discontinued in September. The current largest is the iPod Classic 120GB.

Is it me or is the capacity of the Ipod's getting smaller?

I mean going from 160 to 120GB's and the largest in the new touch series is one 32GB's. What gives? I have the 60GB myself and it is dying in more ways than one. I am looking at the 32GB touch but I worry about that space that I am losing.

120Gb is a micro hard drive.
32GB is a flash memory There is a limit to how big u can make this
These r very different technologies. flash drive is a solid state technology
while a micro hard drive has moving parts and hence bigger

Wasn't there one before that which was like an actual hard drive and more space?

Like, 2 years ago?

Adding to what has been said above...

Yes, they are getting smaller. lol But I believe that to be very temporary.

I think they simplified the Classic line by going to 120GB, as before they had two models -- one 80GB and one 160GB. It was a compromise.

I’d bet that in 2009 they will have one 240GB Classic.

And of course the Classics are hard-drive systems, while the iPod Touch, iPhone and Nano have flash-based memory (solid state/no spinning platter or moving read/write heads) which haven’t yet caught up to the storage capacity/price.

Personally I would like a flash-based Touch that had 256GB (One quarter of a trillion storage locations).

And that will come, but it’ll probably take another 4 to 5 years for flash-based systems to get there. They'll double (binary) every 18 months are so (so 32GB to 64GB to 128GB to 256GB).

Small hard-drives (that will fit an MP3 player) are already at 240GB and 320GB at affordable prices. wink

Same here.

I'm at 46G on ITunes after shaving it down-again.

Very cool.

So you know first hand that consumers can be an insatiable/irrational bunch. wink

We want bigger/faster/smaller/cheaper. And the same mantra is going out to the micro-drive makers.

And some people have have been telling me for more than 20 years that we've pretty much hit the ceiling. But Moore's Law (capacities and processing speeds doubling every 18 months or so) has remained true (give or take 6 months) since the late 1950s.

I don't think we ever hit a ceiling. We just move on to other methods/technologies.

Soon it'll be biology. wink

Well, here is my problem. Do you all think that I should wait until a bigger "Touch", comes out? Like I said in my last post, I have the 60GB video ipod that I got 2 maybe three years ago. I as of right now, I only have about 27GB of music on it, mostly old R&B classics, nothing that is so recent. Should I bite the bullet and get the 32GB touch or should I wait? Part of me knows that I would be sacraficing GB but, I only listen to my Pod going to and from work and that's like an hour each way?

Any advice would be appreciated...

Now i am into wireless chips which is more sophisticated then flash.
Flash is more dependent on the process technology. wireless is all about design

It depends on how much work you really want.

If you're willing to select the music that downloads to your iTouch every few weeks or months, then I'd say consider buying it now. That can be a lot of extra work if your moods change frequently.

But if you'd rather just download your entire music collection, with never any thought, I'd wait 3 or so years until they have a 128GB iTouch for around the same price/size.

Or you could always hope that they'll put a hard drive into the iTouch, but I seriously doubt that this will ever happen. They like their slim form factor and solid-state memory (not to mention other technologies) is only a few years from being high capacity at relatively small prices and sizes.

160GB has been the largest iPod so far, Cinne. Perhaps you were dreaming based on the massive size of your record collection? wink

I wonder if I can still cop a 160 GB even though they are no longer "new". Do you think they've been shipped away?

Calgary has a few Apple dealers.

I really want to try converting all my CDs to a hard drive and dumping it to an iPod, and since I rip at 320 kbps, I am thinking the largest iPod will be the only way to go.

My bad. I thought you were saying that you had more music but had it currently paired down to 27GB.

But if you only use it to-and-from work, do you really need the the larger screen or wifi technologies (or would you change your habits and also use this for the Internet?)

The 64GB iTouch will be here in 18 months (give or take 6 months) and then you aren't losing anything but moving parts.

But it sounds like you've already talked yourself into that 32GB touch. wink

But based on your use habits, it sounds like you already have the perfect iPod (until it dies). wink

I just read this comment about people whining about the 160GB model being discontinued

There is just not enough time in the world to listen to 40,000 songs that's around 2,000 hours of music in other words 83 days of solid music.

If you are that despreate to have two months of music on your iPod then you are probably that geek-crazy to have enough money to buy two 120gb ones.

The pod that I now, freezes up and sometimes does not hold a charge. Is it a definate that the 64GB is coming out in 18months? Cause if it is, I might just wait. Oh and yes, I would probably use it more often due to it having those features. Yeah...I know....I just want that "brand spankin new car"...
