Whats The MOST Honest Book About James Brown's Life/Career??? Can somebody tell me???
Coz I don't wanna waste my time reading gibberish bullshit. I was shocked to see how almost EVERYBODY were cagey about JB's life on the documentary Soul Survivor. He really got them dick whupped Lyn Collins was the only one who dropped afew hints about his personal life,,,,,that he was a control freak, he would tab her phone and hire somebody to stalk her from state to state, and etc. Thats about it. I just want to read an objective account about his life story.

Fred Wesley's "Hit me Fred" is a welll written book. It's not just about James Brown (if you like Ike & Tina, you will find this a good read as well, because Fred describes his years on the road with them). But it's a very accurate account of Fred's years with JB.
Marva Whitney has a book coming out in 2009, which is an amazing read, too. Alan Leeds is working on one about his years with Brown, so you know it'll be good. The two books Brown published himself are entertaining and a must-read, but often are inaccurate when it comes to the creation of his music. If I had to pick one of the two, I'd pick the first one.

Her stories are WILD I'm looking forward to this. Can't wait for the Alan Leeds book, he's the one I'm intrigued about the most.

Yeah, Marva's book looks at her entire career, not only the JB years, but JB was pretty much her focus. You'll read some scary stories, like the one when JB put a gun to her head and threatened to shoot her when she wanted to quit .. she has very accurate memory, you'll like this one. Charles Bobbitt, Brown's former personal manager, is working on a book as well, but I assume that it won't show too many of the dark sides, since Bobbitt was his most loyal friend. Danny Ray is working on his book as well, so is Martha High. [Edited 11/25/08 7:05am]

Yeah thats the story that keeps popping in my head. The other was when James dragged one of the girls(either Marva or Lyn) into the elevator, and kicked her untill she went unconscious. Marva's book sounds like a REAL treat, but I'm afraid its gonna be one-sided(as much as I love gossip). I'm really pressing my fingers for Alan's, he'll def bring a heartfelt yet objective effort about Mr.Brown's life as well as music,,,,you could always count on him for dropping some knowledge and intersting commentary

Actually, it's not really one-sided. In spite of everything James put her tthrough, she managed to stay objective. She had deep love and respect for James, and she still does. I've read one of the final drafts of the book and I was positively surprised how well Marva managed to not drag Brown through the mud. Btw, it was Marva who was dragged into the elevator by Brown. I'm really pressing my fingers for Alan's, he'll def bring a heartfelt yet objective effort about Mr.Brown's life as well as music,,,,you could always count on him for dropping some knowledge and intersting commentary Alan's will be great, that's for sure. Unfortunately he will only focus on his own experiences with Brown. Someone truly needs to write a good biography on the man, and Alan would be the perfect man for the job - but he doesn't want to do it. Maybe Nelson George ...

I've worked (and still work) with quite a few of James Brown's artists and have toured with the James Brown show for a while myself. I've heard so many stories from back in the day over the past years that I started to write a log, and I have collected a pretty nice amount of stories .. I've even begun to match stories from various band members to see if I can verify that they really happened. That's how I found out that Fred's book is pretty accurate, and I could help out Marva with her's. I even have some stories on my own that I've seen on the road with Brown, some pretty funny stuff .. and often strange .. but people usually just want to hear the stories from back in the day, although the newer stories are interesting as well ...

If you read it, you'll know that James Brown never would have talked like that. It also has many events and names wrong and is full of other errors. And it's not as entertaining as his first book.
